I agree “it’s pretty” is not a critique. Many of the people posting are new. They don’t know what’s bad or good about their photos. When I see an image that has little to redeem it, I think about the experience level and what the photographer was trying to communicate. Then I can critique even a snapshot because I know it has meaning to the person who shot it. I was a beginner once and I shot some pretty bad images, still do sometimes! Pointing out good and bad helps neophytes grow. I also agree an experienced photographer may not need as much positive commentary. Wading through badly written or meaningless critiques is tedious. Perhaps the mixture of experience levels in one forum is where my difference of opinion lies. I do enjoy looking at all the work people are doing and the site overall. It is very inspiring.
