Hi – this is my introduction post. I’m living in Indonesia, so a lot of my photos have a tropical flavour. This includes jungle, animals, beaches and landscapes.
I started with cameras many many years ago and I my collection is mostly documentary style and family/friends snapshots. I’m starting to learn a bit more about it all now though and hoping to get some better results!
cheers!

Welcome to LightStalking! I see that you have found our critique forum, SharkTank. I will look at your post this afternoon when I can get to my desktop and see the photo full size. We also have non-critique forums including the Landscape Forum, the Weekend Photography Challenge (Perplexed, this weekend), various Photography Throwdowns, General Photo ChitChat, and my personal favorite, Mobile Monday. Posting in these forums is a fun way to get to know members and the site. I will be on vacation in Bali in September. I can’t wait!

I’ll be in Bali in September as well strangely enough! There’s lots of photo opportunities there but it’s easy to fall into the cliche traps as well…

I’m near Jakarta. On holidays I try to explore more widely though. It’s a big country and it takes a lot of time to get around. Any recommendations from you for places to go?

Allows Edits? YesI really enjoyed the docks in Jakarta (those old wooden dhows are amazing and the concrete dust makes for some interesting misty effects) and also pretty much any of the old colonial architecture near there is awesome (but go early).
The volcanoes make for some great landscapes like near Bandung for example.
Also, the people are so friendly that I think you can do street photography a bit easier there. Just flash a smile after the shot and people tend to be in a good mood.
Lovely place to travel.

Yeah there at lots of interesting places here but I’ve found you have to work quite hard to get good pictures. The light is frequently super bright and harsh, the air is hazy (or worse) and there’s lots of unwanted extras in the shots like electricity cables, trash, satellite dishes etc.
You are right though, people are generally happy to have their photo taken and photography is a super popular hobby here. Also Indonesia seems to feature in photo competitions and the pages of National Geographic pretty often, so there must be ways round the challenges!
