Hi. I am a theater lighting and scene designer who started taking photography seriously when my work prevented me from designing 25 years ago. Now, I am retired, and my wife and I cruise full time on our sailboat. This winter, we are living on land for health reasons but will be back on the boat in April.

I do not know as there was a FIRST photograph. My early photographs documented designs for theatrical productions. The shift to photography as a primary medium was gradual. The earliest photograph I remember was one my wife took of some geese at a lake. The first photograph that I took that I remember as a photograph (rather than as a scene or lighting design) was a portrait that I did with a flashlight, dark room, open shutter.

The geese photograph caught a story. The flashlight portrait gave a realistic but otherworldly quality to the portrait.

I am capturing experience. That’s probably the best way to put it. My wife and I are currently living in a beach house in North Myrtle Beach. So I am shooting from the balcony and trying to find variety in light, color, texture, form. Also shooting while walking on the beach, driving on errands. I then am posting for friends on FaceBook. When we move back on our boat, then that will define the experiences. At the same time, I am learning a new camera. My Canon DSLR is wonderful but heavy and bulky. So I got a Nikon Coolpix P600. I’m trying to make it do what I want it to do, with some but not complete success. Long answer to short question.
