I agree with your proposed perspective shift… as for the aperture, I noticed the problem described by @michael-lloyd some time ago, and deliberately tried a – fairly – closed aperture. Still didn’t get all of the petals in focus, and opening it up would have worsened this.
Thanks for your feedback!

I hear you – appreciate the feedback! thanks!
I’m actually seriously looking into these…! thanks!
thanks for the feedback… the crop was deliberate, but after receiving the same critique a few times I went back and opened it up a bit: https://500px.com/photo/95389029/tulip-by-daniel-kramer
as for the colors and tones, esp. in the background – it makes total sense what you wrote, I’ll keep it in mind for the future!
indeed – thanks for the pointer!
many thanks for your view on this. I’ll look into a ring light and play some more with the image in post.
Will do – and thanks for the feedback pertaining to the image!
thanks for your thoughts on this – much appreciated.

@tobiepsg – makes sense… in this regard, this is also more of a close-up due to lack of a proper macro-lens. It was fun to fool around a bit, though.Hi Karenhy,
I agree with LOfty – I think it’s a great starting point, and accentuating the moon and the cloud(s) with the suggested crop while brightening it a tad could work wonders here.

I don’t think it’s too dark – I actually really like the tonality of the image.
I’m a bit distracted by the vertical line on the right hand side, though… cropping it off might mess with your composition, I guess, but it may be worth a try.

I really like this image – a great capture of the moment.
The noise due to high ISO doesn’t bother me, though the vignette may be a tad too strong – it does lead the eye to the focus of the image, but since there are just the girls, I think it’s unnecessary to have it this pronounced.
Maybe raising the exposure a little bit would show the detail in the hair, and I think the image could use the brightening. It’s a fine line between showing the intimacy of the moment and being too dark, I guess…

what a great capture – the focal length really helped pull the dolphin a bit closer to the beach, I guess, and I really like the composition of the shot.
It appears as though the kid isn’t looking out at the water, but that doesn’t really matter for the impact of the image.
I think b/w works well here, not so sure about the vignette. It looks a bit weird how it only occupies the corners – I’m thinking maybe soften it, but pull it in a bit more, or leave it out altogether.

Hi Chrissie,
I think the composition is nice, the separation of fore- and background works, but is fairly extreme… the background is way out of focus (which you can’t really do anything about in post), but the petals appear a bit over-sharpened, looking too artificial for my taste. Hard to tell at this size, though.

Hi Randall,
the centered composition appears a bit static to me – maybe taking the church off center on one of the rule-of-thirds-lines would add some dynamic.
The waterline is a bit off-level – especially with water I always try to maintain a perfectly straight waterline/horizon.
The light and focus are great, maybe you could bring out the colors in the foliage a bit more.

This image is really great – I like pretty much everything about it, from the light and colors to the composition and the focus.
The only thing – this being the Shark Tank – I have to ask is: What is this thing in the background with the reflection on it? I does add interest to the image, but what is it? Looks metallic…

great wildlife shot – nice profile.
I like the composition, and the 1×1-crop works great.
I can’t really tell at this size, but it looks a little bit soft, which would be weird at f11…
– Daniel
I agree with @jimbolla’s crop-suggestion. That area is kind of unnecessary – the reflection doesn’t appear clean enough to be worth keeping so much of the water in the frame.
I’d also lighten it up a little, maybe 1 stop, and add some contrast and maybe make the sky more interesting. Come to think of if, if you cropped it as a landscape shot with just some water beneath the ski and the trees in the background without most ofthe sky, it might work as well.
From what I can tell at this size, you seemed to have frozen the action well here, focus seems good, so really a nice capture.

The only thing I struggle with is how dark the monument is, due to the backlit nature of the shot. Considering that it’ll be mostly viewed as a thumbnail, that might not make that much of a difference, but I’d try to lighten that area up a little bit.
What does work great is the composition and the color distribution in the image, and the colors in general.
Those little Star Spangled Banner on the bottom are a little bit distracting, but again, won’t probably be noticed at a small size.
– Daniel
that does make sense – thanks for the input!
