wow Tom thanks for taking the time out to review my work and write to me about what you thought. Im actually 29!!!! that was a MAJOR typo πŸ™‚
but in terms of my work I feel 19. I never really studied photography, a couple of classes in college, but thats before I left my ‘career’ to pursue photography full time and before it became an extension of myself. to hear that my work has clear ‘influence of other artists especially in the commercial sense’ is kind of crazy to me πŸ™‚ im not too familiar with the work of other artists, except from looking at magazines and a looking into a handful of photographers. influence is sometimes invisible, u dont know its happening. i guess i AM on the right track here, not having consistent work, in terms of getting jobs kind of makes me feel at times that my work is not translating well..in terms of “definite stereotype imagery presented” are you referring to me mostly shooting black youth? if so, i guess if i wanted to get work shooting ANYONE i would have to show more diversity in my portfolio? i shoot what i shoot and always just hoped that pple would see it , like it, and hire me..but maybe thats not so, u have to spell it out. in regards to to going with ‘portrait photographer, im not quite sure why i get a blank stare, maybe i need to use better descriptive adjectives..or my delivery just isnt great. in terms of knocking on doors…man!!! im knocking, sometimes pple never answer the door, or take forever to, and when they do sometime they just peek to see who it is and close the door. thats a whole different forum!!! πŸ™‚

hmmm, ok. Well my dilemma is this. i photograph people, not usually in a candid manner. my purpose is not to ‘make them look good’ but more so catching a moment in time, almost like photo journalism i guess but its not a random street shot but more documentary even if its in a studio, not sure if that makes any sense.. its about capturing that emotion in time. i dont have a premeditated idea of what i want to express. so i know im a portrait photographer but when i say that to people i get a blank stare. maybe i just cant figure out the proper ‘category’ .. being that you are a teacher Tom would you mind taking a look at my work and helping me figure this all out..i’ve been told well if your a portrait photographer, then you have to show that in your work, you have to shoot young and old all different kinds of people.,,i just dont know where im going wrong
