Well I cant find it in my book I know I read it some where I will keep looking but heres some I found on line to try to help you out some more.

Switch to Manual Focusing – one challenge you may face shooting through any kind of fence is that your camera may not know what to focus on – the fence or the object behind it. Switch to manual focus mode and you’ll be in complete control of what is in and out of focus.

Get close the the Fence – ideally your best bet is to try to make the fence so out of focus that it can be barely seen in your shot. To do this one strategy is to get up very close to the fence – so close your lens has no chance of focusing on it. It may not be possible to be right up against a fence (shooting a lion at the zoom may mean you have other barriers in place for your own safety) but the closer the better.

Use a Large Aperture – choose a large aperture (making the number of your aperture as small as possible) will help to narrow the depth of focus and will hopefully through the lens even further out of focus.

Wait Until your Subject is away from the fence – if your subject is moving around behind the fence – wait until they are a little further back from the fence to take the shot. The closer they are to the fence the more the fence will be in focus.

Position Your Lens to Shoot Through Larger Gaps – This one isn’t rocket science – but if the fence has largish openings you’ll do better to position these gaps in the middle of your frame.

Avoid Reflections – if shooting through a part of a fence where there are reflections from the sun or other lights coming off the fence you’ll find the fence will become even more noticeable. As a result try to find a part of the fence that is shaded – or get someone to stand in a way that casts a shadow on the fence.

Incorporate the fence into your composition – it may be that the fence can become an important part of your composition – so consider breaking all the above rules to try that out!

this one the camera did a lot better you can just barely see around the edges where the fence was. I will take some time now quick to try to find where I read about shooting through fences in my book

This is one where you can still see some of where the fence was but some how the camera phased it out.

@lia217 For the fence there is a way to shoot it so that the camera kind of fades it out for you I did it accidentally once when I visited a cat sanctuary. My pics turned out with out the fence I was amazed and happy. In some of them you can see where the fence was others you cant see it at all. I have no idea what setting I used or how the camera did it I will post some samples and show you. I will also read the book and see if I can figure out what exactly I did that day.

@lia217 don’t feel alone if some of this is overwhelming. I am lost on some of what they are talking about too. I try to absorb as much as I can and ask questions. I haven’t found the general thread they are talking about yet. some of the lens talk I understand some I have no idea. But little by little I am picking things up since I joined the site. I am so jealous that you get to shoot all the exotic animals of south africa. Very lucky! I’m excited to see you progress and get better and better 😉

Thanks so much and yes some of the info is a bit advanced for me still but I will do my best to sort through it. As for the remote trigger. I bought one but was rather disappointed because it only works if I am in front of the camera. I wanted to still be able to be behind the camera. I also want to get a good lens for shooting wildlife but have no idea what to buy. any suggestions on a good zoom lens for wildlife @aarongeis?

I snapped this shot without thinking. It was a random moment when my cousin was holding his newborn and his fiance was picking something off the babies eye. There was no time to plan or set up I was actually walking past to get a soda and saw them at it and thought that might make a neat shot, so I snapped it any thoughts?

@capetown99 I am learning so may not be the best person to try to critique but I’ll say what I think, just remember I am new to all this. I like this photo it speaks to me. I like the way you framed the guy in the only slightly distracting point to me is the very tip of his head is cut off. If that was intentional my apologies. I also have no idea what he has in his hand or what he is doing with it. So I am unsure the message the photo is sending. I see a guy chillin on the street corner. The focus is good and even though I am not sure what he is doing I like the photo. He seems to have a calm relaxed expression on his face almost serene like. The bricks in the sidewalk in the background seem really whited out a lot I am not sure if that’s intentional or not or how you would change or adjust that either. Hope some of this helps, wish I knew more. Its a nice shot.

Silent sneak by crystal on Light Stalking

ok here is my best deer photo so far. I am having a lot of trouble shooting deer because the slightest movement they run. Also I only get one or 2 clicks and they run! If I follow them too quickly with the camera they run! So 98% of my deer photos are them running away from me with their tails up waving “bye bye sucker” and laughing merrily as they bound away to oblivion. I know I need a different lens and am currently saving, saving, saving to buy one but I have no idea what one to buy when I get a decent amount of cash together. Right now I am limited to shooting with the lens that came with my camera. I am using a canon rebel eos t3 camera with a efs 18-55mm lens and a uv filter. Ive tried manual focusing deer but most times my movements send them running before I can get focused and set. So this shot was actually taken on the auto setting for action which I have resorted to trying because they are always RUNNING! I am disappointed to turn to the cameras auto setting as I want to learn this beast of a DSLR, but after so many failed attempts I wanted to get at least one somewhat acceptable deer picture. Now I am back to manual settings and determined to get a deer despite my disadvantage of the short lens I have to work with. Any advice or critique on the photo is welcome thanks

Ok after reading more on the ND filter and the cpl filter I think I will pick up a CPL filter first instead and try that out I do a lot of out door shooting. I am excited to see how this works 😉 A question though, @nikon-nut, Would you use a CPL filter in the phot above with the zebra if they were standing in the full bright sun, even if it is not hazy out?

Wow thanks so much for all the advice @nikon-nut I need to purchase a few more of these filters so I can try this stuff and see what you guys are talking about Therese so much to learn it seems overwhelming at times. Books are great too but sometimes hard to understand exactly what they are talking about. I want to try to pick up a neutral density filter first I think and learn that one before the others. I guess I will take them one at a time and experiment. thanks for your advice @aarongeis also I will try to shoot a long view landscape as well in the late afternoon haze and see if i see a difference. It is so great of you guys to share your knowledge, Thank you 😉

I am also a novice but It looks like a very bright sunny day and if you waited till they were completely in the sun and then maybe used a filter. I am not completely sure what filter to suggest or if that’s even the right situation for like a UV filter or not. I just found out about filters myself and bought one. I have been experimenting trying to figure out the difference of shooting with my UV filter and without it. I think I am doing something wrong because the photos look the same so far ;( wish I could be more help. The great thing is if your friend owns the zebras you can always reshoot them. I think they make great subject matter and can have lots of good contrast.

I just joined and have the same problem with getting un logged. it takes me to some error page or a page that says what I am looking for can not be found but here are some other suggested pages, with a list of links. I usually log completely out and wait 5-10 mins and keep trying back till it works again. I have no idea how to fix it.

I can only copy and paste one code at a time and I have to keep going back to my album and then I lose the post to the forum. I hope you all enjoy my working animals and can’t wait to see yours. cheers.
