thanks for the comments. I was on a quick walk around while waiting to pick someone up a few blocks away and only had the one lens. the median behind me was somewhat similar to what you see, but I was unable to setup farther back than where I was. but if I get a chance at a shot like that again I’ll hopefully have more time to setup. I’ll try cloning the bricks to see what kind of difference removing the yellow stripe makes and also take a look across the shot to see what else distracts. thanks!
thanks for the feedback. I was so intent on the trains that I completely missed the bricks! I’ll have to go back through my other shots – I shot a few of the crossing traffic but didn’t strike me as being very compelling, but I didn’t consider at all the possibility of adding them in. unfortunately I live several hours away and don’t get there much but next time I’ll try some varying exposure lengths and see what I can blend together.
those are great! thanks!
Erik and Graham,
Thanks! Glad you like it. I was kind of worried about the crop, but in some ways it seemed unavoidable because there were too many distractions to try and Photoshop 0ut – I don’t think I could have done a suitable job of it with my very beginner level PS skills.
thanks Mariah. yes it’s kind of a different look. I shot it with my fisheye lens to try something new, plus cropped out a bunch of surrounding areas that just distract from the shot. glad you like it.
thanks Tobie. I’m glad you like it.
guys, I have no tips to add but just wanted to say I really like the original shot, as well as the edits. wow.
September 27, 2018 at 9:02 pm in reply to: Where do star trails come from and what do the 500 rule and NPF calculators do #367235Wow, you guys got really deep there. Rob had a great topic on the 500 Rule earlier this month. this topic is interesting to me – I haven’t shot the night sky much yet but looking forward to trying when the nights get cooler and clearer here.
I did, however, write an iOS app for 500 Rule and another for 600 Rule calculations based on full frame and crop frame sensors. Besides working on my photography skills I’ve been working on teaching myself iOS app development. I also like automating calculations where I can so that’s another reason – I didn’t really see any apps for that.
great shot. I love the details.
Robert, that’s a spectacular shot.
Thanks Federico!
thanks Robert!
how is this? thanks again!!!!
Thanks! I’ll do that!
Thanks Philip! I really appreciate the encouragement and all the tips from everyone.
thanks for the replies everyone! I’ll give removing the power lines a try, and I agree with Federico’s comment on the circles in the foreground – I hadn’t completely thought through exactly what sequence I wanted to try. what I should have done was thought through “ok – for about 5 seconds do this, then move on to…” and so on. hopefully as I shoot more with this I’ll know for sure what’s in the frame and what’s not.
I also agree with Dahlia’s comment on the power lines. gives me a chance to work on that in Photoshop! I did shoot this during blue hour – this is pretty close to my house and I shot this very early yesterday morning, so I knew the sky would be lit somewhat. And we also have a ton of light pollution around us. maybe getting out of town and trying this again will bring better results.
Rob, thanks for bringing up David. He’s already given some advice, and I can tell he knows the subject.
have a great weekend everyone.
Chris
Thanks Federico!
thanks Dahlia!
Thanks for the tips! For this I used gloves and had on long sleeves and long pants. I will definitely add a small fire extinguisher. Luckily we’ve had a lot of rain lately and the ground is saturated all over.
I also used a whisk to hold the steel wool. I think my steel wool is also 0000 grade. I pulled it apart a bit to get to burn more evenly.
I need to check out the shark tank I guess to see what other comments everyone else will have.
Thanks again.
Chris
thanks!
