David Sikes replied to the topic I'd love some feedback on this in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 9mo ago
A more striking sky would have worked better, for me. Perhaps using a polarizing filter while shooting, or working on darkening/saturating the sky before the b&w conversion would have helped the shot out.

I’d like more information – what kind of filter did you use? What’s the lighting setup, and if you lit, what was your f-stop and shutter speed?
The photo feels very unbalanced to me. This is probably mostly due to the contrast from the left to the right side of the frame – the right side is underexposed, and makes it very distracting and heavy…[Read more]

David Sikes replied to the topic Comment please 🙂 in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 9mo ago
It’s pretty, but it feels very unoriginal. It feels like I’ve seen this multiple times before. So while the picture is lovely, there’s nothing about it that makes it stand out in my mind.
Things that might have helped, in my unqualified opinion:
1) A much more interesting sky. The clouds and sky in this shot just aren’t very powerful to…[Read more]

David Sikes replied to the topic newbie….what do you think? in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 9mo ago
I second that it needs more sky, and the sun needs greater emphasis. The latter is especially because you have this line in the rocks pointing the eye towards the sun, which is compositionally helpful if the eye has something more to point to. So, emphasize the sun is my biggest comment—whether that be through more of a star effect while s…[Read more]

@admin – yes, I’m finding that. It’s great to get all this feedback, and my next portrait will have a much closer light source and more fill to help soften the shadows. It’s a little too low-key. Honestly, I should know better – I’d almost never light an interview like this for a documentary.
A hugely helpful comment I’ve gotten was about her…[Read more]

I totally agree that black and white would hide my mistake with the skin tone. Thanks for posting that idea!
Originally, I tried an edit in black and white and I liked it more, but that wasn’t my intention with the original shot, so I wanted to get feedback based on the color version.
Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for that, including the book recommendation! I’ll check that out.

@reiner – Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback. What would make a more flattering background? Is a contrasting color more flattering, or just a more neutral color? Is it too textured?

David Sikes replied to the topic Elle – Noir in colors in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 9mo ago
One more thought – you have a hotspot at the bottom right. That’s not noir, that’s just uncontrolled light, and it brings out the texture very sharply, drawing attention away from the model. A gobo or a snoot to control it would have been great. Noir is low-key, but it’s still VERY controlled. Keeping that corner of non-importance in shadow, and…[Read more]

First thought: you got halfway there. You have the low-key lighting of noir with fiery red color blended in. But I think you could have pushed the blend more. First, I think the addition of more grayscale would have benefited the look you’re going for a lot, and made the model stand out more. As in, I would have taken the blue on the top left down…[Read more]

Hey all. I’m a video guy venturing into photography. I figure it’s a good skill to build, and will directly improve my videography work. I say that to say that I’m basically brand new at this, so I need all the constructive criticism I can get. So please, post negative constructive criticism. I say that with the caveat that I know my work isn’t…[Read more]

David Sikes replied to the topic Yellow Fields… in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 9mo ago
Honestly, it feels like two photos to me and my eyes feel conflicted. Yellow is a real attention-getter of a color, but so is red. Obviously the field draws the eye immediately, but then I feel confused about what the subject is. To me, the yellow field isn’t interesting enough on its own to be the subject of the photo, but it draws the eyes to…[Read more]
