I honestly think that this is getting ridiculous. So, if Ansel Adams were posting one of his iconic images here, no one could say that he/she thought it was a good image? If that is the case, this forum is supposed to be the antichrist to all the others with sweet talk.

I believe in free speech and if I come across an image that I think is good, I want to be able to say that, period.

If I am being pushed against the wall and can only say negative things, then I might as well invest my time in other things.

I have said enough critical things but I also want to be able to say the opposite when I consider it correct from my POV. And that does not mean that I am looking for the positive points but sometimes they are just obvious.

As I feel that I have just been shut up in my right to speak my mind and certain comments have been moderated because I did so, I am leaving this forum as an active commentator … I wish everybody good luck.

It is not as sharp as this type of image could be … what were your settings? Tripod? Lens?

It also has quite some noise. Feel that it could be cropped just a little on the bottom.

Fairly decent holiday shot – should it be more?

Only an image, nothing else, no behind the scenes-story, come on … if you want to hear more, give us sty.

Is this the best you got or just something you decided to feed to the sharks because you don’t need it any longer … why?

settings? story behind this? anything to hold on to?

          where is the fashion (item)?

ok, she is a pretty young woman, but that is really all there is.

          the backdrop is simply horrible.

I don’t really have any problem with any lean but that is just me. However, there is still some sensor dust, mainly in the left part of the sky. The frame has this polaroid feel to it and looks like the image had been framed for hanging. It works although I do consider it cheating a bit đŸ˜‰

I think if you are really getting into these portrait shots, getting your lighting right is way more important than the crops.

You also need a solid background. If you practice on B&W first, you can use any household lamp or lamps and practice lighting. Continuous light for background or side light might be easier to use and set up. If you can connect your DSLR with your laptop, you can see each shot immediately on a much larger screen.

You have one big advantage … you have 2 free and gorgeous models!

Do you have any other flash than the on camera one? Even if you don’t thin tissue paper or cheap bouncers, shower caps, etc. can already make a big difference …

You need some additional light to separate his nice spiky hair from the background – rim light?

What is that coming out of his hair? One spiky thing and one fluffy, cloudy thing, and there is sth white at about 2 o’clock …

… and as Rick Sammon would say – Take the flash off the camera.

The question is why did you crop so much?

What flash? On-camera, which would explain the stronger light on his forehead …

It is yr grandson so why cut one of his ears off … looks like a shot for some commercial with that crop … I am puzzled by the crop … can we see the pre-crop version, please?

IT’S BLURRY! The rest hardly matters …

What is that strange thing at 9 o’clock about 1 cm from the left edge?

What is that other dark debris on the beach … bottles? Unless this is a documentary style image, you should get rid of them … but then it will still be blurry, so who cares …

It also feels as if the town was sliding to the right …

Could be a much better image if it was not blurry … I would blur it more and call it art!

High/er res version, settings, lens, please.

Doesn’t look like a true macro lens on here.

How much and what did you do in post?

It is macro-ok but not macro-wow yet … doesn’t look sharp enough for that …

My recipes for resolving a sky which is nothing but a white sheet of cloud …

                        1. Live and work with it regardless what others think and/or say …

                        2. Insert a new sky which means that you should shoot skies whenever you can and like their look … there are tutorials on the web for this … some photographers have an archive of skies, textures, etc.

                        3. Be patient and wait for a “better” sky.

Everybody nice here? You must be kidding … this is the shark tank and you are pretty much dead meat the moment you dip your big toe or any corner of your image into it … I for example try to be much meaner than in normal life where I am a mean SOB already! But welcome đŸ™‚

I don’t know whether you adjusted these settings for this image specifically or whether they were you walk-around-settings? Obviously there was much less ambient light than I would have expected. 2.8 produces a very shallow depth of field and is the main culprit for the out-of-focus parts of the image. 1/200 might also not have been fast enough but you were on ISO 800 already … hmm …

My suggestion other than reshooting, getting an assistant and make-up artist for the cows and hope that all three of them will be in a splendid mood and pose well … go B&W, colour isn’t doing that much to your image and B&W will give you more leeway in post.

What software do you have? Play around with B&W settings you like and find appropriate, get rid of that one head which has a Halloween look to it and … drumroll … some will think I am breaking my own rules … add one of those borders which are either fuzzy or look like you shot on film … but no simple just white or just black border … that should pull it all together and make for an artsy pic …

In case you don’t like B&W, forget what I said and struggle with the colours!

@fagopher, Thank you for your reply, explanation and feedback. I am only one voice but as you might have noticed this is still a rather small circle. I am sure that many would like to get feedback on many of their photos or perhaps even all of them but if you post 6 or more within a 24 hour period, others might lose out on feedback which I am sure is not what you would want.

Yes, there seem to be no rules, I wish there were as I have also noticed that some members (not you) have posted pics without any info whatsoever and then never engaged more on this.

This forum depends on a giving and taking which should be balanced and give everybody a fair chance to post, critique, explain, etc.

I am not an admin but as this is a shark tank, I snap when I feel there is a need – that is my nature as a shark.

I also wish everybody was a bit selective in what they are posting. I am sure there are images you are very clear on what went wrong and others you might really be in doubt. If you only want to hear what you already know, fine but remember that it will take energy away from the ones you might really be in doubt about.

I also noticed that your pictures are – as they say, all over the board – meaning that there is HDR, sepia-toned ones, landscapes, etc. … my suggestion is to work a bit more focussed on one type or genre, not everybody has to do HDR or macro or long-shutter speed ones from the very start. Dabble in it if you are curious, by all means but I would rather see and critique shots you feel more confident about than the first attempt in sth because then you and others will basically turn this into a “teach-me-photography” class which it is not and can never be.

Remember that all of us are here voluntarily and might not be any longer tomorrow or the day after tomorrow if there is better, sweeter blood somewhere else. Keeping us interested will be beneficial to you and all other posting members, wearing us out or feeding us bloody treats which have an obviously boring and bland taste to them will turn this into a boring and blandly tasting forum one as well.

And please have some patience if you do not get a reply within 6 or whatever hours. A lot of people are in different time zones and critiquing your and other images might not be their priority No.1.

                            Cheers
                            One of the Sharks

I don’t know … I wouldn’t give it my two thumbs up but you are the real judge … my infamous 2 cents … let it sit for a while, days, weeks, perhaps even months … come back when you feel like it and work on it with more distance and perhaps hours and hours of post-processing under your belt …

@fagopher, I find it funny that you post an image at at 7:28 am and then “no comments ? :(” at 2:20 pm. Apart from that without having counted them, I think you posted at least 5 or 6 images, many of them of mediocre quality, within the last day or so in this forum.

I feel a bit abused and will refrain from any further comments unless you slow down and become more selective. I don’t know what your intention is?

@veronikac, I am still very confused about ul-ing high-res images … unfort, I can only see the small version (500×287) version but don’t worry too much about it.

Hand signing on the side of the canvas print sounds like a good and elegant idea.

another background/foreground problem but this time the bird is terribly out of focus … I would consider this image unsavable …

The problem is that the bird almost blends into the background due to the dark colours in both.

That branch in the lower left is so dominant that my eye keeps jumping there but it has no significance for the photo, or does it? That sharp separation between light areas of the background and dark ones is very/too strong.

I don’t know how well in focus the bird and its head/eyes are but you could try separating it from the background and dropping it into a new one keeping that piece of tree it is sitting on. Sounds like quite some work and only makes sense if the image of the bird alone is good enough. It looks fairly decent in the small file I can see but the your highest res file would show more detail.

Well, as you posted it here, we are all naturally interested in it, so we can critically tear it apart đŸ˜‰

Apart from your interest in anyone else’s interest, you unfortunately tell us very little about the image … settings, why did you take it, what are you trying to communicate with this image, what genre would you consider it being part of … travel, wildlife, environmental, special interest …

It looks a bit fuzzy … can you link to a high/er res image, please?

Is it important that they haven’t been fed, are they behaving differently then?

I really don’t know what you’d like to hear but I know what I’d like to know … or I could say: “3 cows, aha, well, next image please …”
