I was taught in my portrait classes to leave enough room for framing – if I crop it more wouldn’t that create a problem for that? or would it just balance it more?

I’m one of those that likes the tilt – I do all my photography from a strange angle. Are the shadows due to the girls looking into the sun? If I were to do them with their backs to the sun would that fix it or should I use a fill flash?

woah – yes harsh but very much appreciated!! I didn’t do the black and white because it was a bad photo – I like black and white. I didn’t know that rule about the sun!! I was taught old school to have the sun to your back – of course that was not for portrait photography.

The black and white shot has enough contrast to make it very dramatic, but the color shot seems sort of washed out. Also the clouds seem too bright. Are they the focal point or is the piece of dead wood?
In any case, I like the photo.

I’m not a professional so this is merely my opinion, but I think if the middle wood were lower so that you had three different heights it might be more interesting. It would draw your eye up to the lighthouse instead of stopping on the second pole.
