Wow. These photos are excellent. I’m working on becoming a better bird photographer, and I can say through experience that it takes enormous patience and skill to achieve photos like these. I love them.
This would be just amazing if it weren’t for the branches between the bird and the end of your lens. One of my biggest frustrations, and I think maybe to all bird photographers, is dealing with the obstacles (branches, bushes, grass, whatever) between us and the birds. It’s a challenge. The bird is gorgeous, and it must have been thrilling to see it.
I want to love this because the bokeh is beautifully accomplished, but this spidey stuff is too freaky.
Maybe this Bokeh throwdown has been going on for a long time, but since I just joined this community they are all new to me. 🙂
Shooting the Milky Way is incredibly fun. I have found that lights from a city a 100 miles away will “collect” during your time exposure. This kind of photo is difficult to display in our limited 500 pixel size. I’ll bet your full size frame is awesome. I try to keep my exposure time limited to around 10 seconds. 🙂
I think I might like this more if the blue were less intense.
I believe that clouds might sometimes be okay as their own subject. I have often pointed my lens right up to the sky to capture the beautiful blue and fabulous sight of clouds, but never captured any cloud “portraits” that would stand on their own. I’m a firm believer that clouds as an element in landscape photos can “make” the frame. Clouds as a theme might be a fun throw down subject. 🙂
This is a pretty interesting subject for still life. I love the idea, but I really want just a little more light.
Crystal this is an excellent photo topic, but one I’ve never seen addressed before. It’s amazing how often animals are important in the world of real work. And you’re right, animals in action are great subjects for photos.

What was your lens and focal length? This is lovely and your background bokeh is perfect.
I shot him in Idaho. There is a marshy area in the Camas Prairie area of Idaho State where hundreds of the yellow-headed black birds come in spring to mate and summer. We also have all black blackbirds as well as Red wing, Tri color and these Yellow-headed. I live in Washington, but I have a sibling in Idaho. One of the joys of visiting her is going to the Camas Prairie to watch for birds. It’s very cool.
I think it’s beautiful as is. It has a lovely old master’s kind of look.

The sky colors and clouds are beautiful, but the large black silhouetted foreground objects dominate too much of the frame. It may have improved your composition to have more sky and less foreground. I think you did an excellent job of picking up the colors and cloud details.
That’s a beautiful drive through N. California. The greens are pretty over saturated for my taste, but I know there is a whole group out there who loves the look. Curious what the time of day and sunlight situation was.
I don’t often shoot the birds that visit my feeders, but what an awesome sight of the mother bird with her baby! That is lovely. We don’t have that particular woodpecker – you must be shooting somewhere in Europe.
So many excellent photos in this throwdown. I thought I’d throw this one into the mix. When shooting birds (or any wildlife capable of blending into its environment) the use of the softened background is essential to eliminate distraction from the subject.
