Most photographers are their worst critic (I know that applies to me). I’m glad that your printing it and the other three.

I see. As a fellow desert lover and hiker I understand your goal. I try to look at images from the perspective of a making a print. It’s been a while since I’ve printed anything and I slipped away from that process a little. What you have done to the image will likely make for a very good inkjet print. The ink flows differently than pixels (pixels don’t flow) and what looks over sharp on the screen will often look genuine on paper. I hope that you print it.

          Hi John,

I like the composition and the conversion. It might disturb some people because it could feel chaotic to them. I “sort of” have that feeling but it’s life and I don’t mind a little chaos every now and then. It’s a little crunchy though.. over-sharpened… maybe too much clarity.

I hope all is well with you. Mike

“One morning a male lion walked past our chalets” There’s something that we don’t say in Texas, ever. 🙂

            I really enjoyed these Tobie.

Nice work John. If I remember correctly Bristlecones are some of the oldest living trees on the planet.

It turns out that there are three different spellings of the name of the ruin in the photos

Wijiji – National Parks Service (probably an archeologist)

Wege-ji – a spelling of a pronunciation gone wrong (not even close I’m told and you’ll see why soon)

Díwózhiishzhiin  – Navajo word for black creosote bush. I have no idea how to pronounce this. I don’t mind trying to say yáʼátʼééh (kind of sounds like yah-tay or yah-at-ehh), which is hello or goodbye or hágoóneeʼ – also a form of goodbye

The spelling of the words rarely sounds like the word :0) Navajo is a very hard language to learn. I’ve been here a month and I’ve listened to the local Navajo radio station, KTNN, for the entire time and not much has sunk in

Apologies for the delay. Work interferes with my photography (and supports it )

Dahlia – the stones are flat pieces of sandstone. It flakes off in layers. Every now and then you will find a fossil if you split a piece of sandstone. Not any around a ruin of course.

Thank you John . I think that I’ve found a new favorite time to visit this area. The monsoon season here offers up some very generous clouds.

Making an image with a camera modified for Super ColorIR is not really much different than making a photograph the “normal way” however the image that it makes is much different than a conventional IR conversion.

Here’s a link to the conversions. Scroll down the first column to Super ColorIR

                        Digital Infrared Filter Comparison Photos

The focusing tool I use makes it easy. At the most I spend 15 minutes on editing, often less than that.

The following two images are “as shot” images that I made but didn’t convert to B&W

The nice thing about these ruins is that I rarely see people there when I visit. Holly is 4 miles up canyon from the main site (park service operated but free) and only 1/2 mile or so from the road (fairly rough) that leads to the parking area. There are petroglyphs down in the canyon that I want to see. Next time…

Thanks all. I think this site is my favorite in the Hovenweep complex. You can drive to within 50 yards (meters) of the place and it’s easy to walk to. It’s on a very high mesa and I think the view can best be described as expansive. It’s on the Navajo reservation and is considered to be an outlier of the Hovenweep complex by some.

Hovenweep is less visited than the other sites. The main part is operated by the park service and there are quite a few other sites outside of that piece. Most are fairly easy to get to.

Tobie – I tried something a little different in Lightroom. I post processed to black and white in CC with Silver Efex Pro and then went back in Lightroom and warmed up the white balance a little bit. I didn’t plan to do it, I just had the thought and tried it and, this time at least, it worked.

Dahlia – Good eye. I put a little time into making my IR images look more like B&W than IR. Everything that I’ve posted recently, that is black and white, has been shot with my IR setup. I used a 1DsMKIII converted to “Supercolor IR” by Life Pixel. The extra color values give a lot of range to play with but make for an odd color palette. When I had it in CS I went with a lot brighter processing than I normally would. I also have to focus with a magnifier on the live view screen because the modification changes the focal plane and autofocus doesn’t work. I use a “fixture” from Zacuto that allows me to mount a magnifier on the back of the camera. Then I use 10x zoom to foxus.

John – Much appreciated John. As you drive into to Chaco Canyon, south of Bloomfield, NM, across the road from the campground, there is a turnout. From there it’s not quite 3 miles back to what the park calls Wijiji. Wege-ji is Navajo for the creosote bush and Wijiji, I think, is how it’s pronounced. It’s a very serene place to visit.

It was actually 3 separate days of driving. We didn’t stay in the canyon because our the couple that took us in couldn’t be away for three days. My friend went back a few years later and stayed in the canyon. Look up Ansel Adams White House Ruin. We couldn’t recreate his shot (and I didn’t really want to) because the location is grown up now.

The canyon system has interesting light. The red rocks reflect the light all around so everything has a red hue to it. It’s an amazing place.

Thanks Tobie. I was very fortunate to be able to see this place. It’s not on the “tour list”.

To get the shot I set my tripod up on one of the slabs of rocks you see in the foreground. I had only taken a 300mm lens (way too long) so I ended up shooting and stitching together 6 frames, so the tripod was a must have. The downhill leg was easily twice as long as the two uphill legs. It was a bit steep

Horseshoe Canyon was on my list last year but the trip fell apart. I’ll get there this year (I think). I’ve got to finish rigging out my not quite old Landcruiser (2000… aka 100 series. Old would be the 80 series) for a little more comfort in the back country. I’d like to have my camping gear and photography gear with me at all times so when I have one of my urges to go I can have a place to sleep when I get there.  Another friend, met through the professor, Grace, used to work with some kind of intertribal agency. Apparently it can be (very) difficult to get all of the various tribes to work together.

I think you will find Craig Childs writing to be engaging and definitely something you can relate to. It’s not fiction.
