Re-crop remembering the rule of thirds and edit out the telegraph pole and lines.
Do you have any more of the water/reflection in the original? If so you could try a portrait crop to remove a lot of the dead space to either side of the steeple and cross. -

I think you could have pushed the depth of field another stop to bring that back petal into focus without losing the nice soft background.
The background flower on the bottom left distracts me and then leads me out of the picture. If you could mask that out I think your composition would be stronger allowing the viewers eye to linger on the…[Read more] -

I always liked lens flare, it reminds me of the photos my dad would take on holidays.
To avoid it you just need to keep the lens in shadow/shade when you are shooting into the light. A lens hood helps but failing that you can cast a shadow over the front element of the lens with your hand.Check It Out -

One of the things that irks me about the site is the Gallery. Don’t get me wrong, I love the gallery but I feel it could be better. My issue is that it pops up whatever image has just been uploaded with no selectivity. If, for example, someone uploads 5 variations of the same photo then the gallery shows all 5 images making the gallery ra…[Read more]

Oscar Wilde statue memorial in Merrioin Square, Dublin. The statue is well known and instantly recognizable to us Dubliners. So, as I shot it I thought that the soft out of focus version would still be recognizable as Wilde allowing me to focus sharply on the more pleasing sculpture (the muse of art?).
I like the result but…[Read more] -

Why did you go with a B&W edit? I can’t help but think that the No parking sign would have been a nice colour contrast to the wall and the bins.Check It Out

Nice shot but I think it would have been stronger if your subject was turned more and looking back into the negative space. However my main quibble is the splash of colour on his shoulder. It is grabbing all my attention. If you could selectively reduce or eliminate that it would put my attention back on the face. I don’t think just changing it…[Read more]

I was intending to use this in a composite but I find that I like the image as a standalone.

If I were to find any fault with this photograph it’s in the viewpoint of the camera. I think if you had lowered your viewpoint closer to the floor so that the vanishing point was lower to the bottom of the photo rather than centred you would get more of a feeling of ‘falling’ into the picture. I find the great big slap of footpath (though…[Read more]

Thanks all for the candour, it is appreciated. 🙂
@nikon-nut. I’ve been playing with the polarizor ever since trying to make it work better for me. I’ve managed to make blue blobs all over the frame but I’m still working on evening it out. 🙂

Seascaape, Dublin BayBought a circular polarizor and took it out to try. This is the Bailey Lighthouse on Howth Head overlooking Dublin Bay. I set up with the polarizor and a graduated ND on a Canon 17-40 L on my 350D.

I would conceder cropping out the foreground element just leaving the trees and the canopy. With the cluttered foreground gone the trees become much stronger in the composition and even the large fir/spruce in the left hand third fits better into the scene. If you do try cropping to see what I mean I would also try adding a tiny twist clockwise…[Read more]

I’d love to see that cloud line lightened a bit. A boost to the midtones and highlights to put a bit more life into it. (That might just be my monitor showing displaying too darkly).
I think the composition is crying out for a square crop. They symmetry of the two main posts and the deck/horizon lines are too good for a 3:2 crop. They could…[Read more] - Load More
