Snapfish and Walgreens will try to “optimize” your photo while a good pro shop will print “as is” when they receive it. This really is a good thing as they don’t interfere with your artistic vision. When I used the local Walgreens I had to specifically tell them to print as is and give up my right to reprint if I did not like the results.

I don’t want to insult here, but many don’t realize that you cannot get consistent results with a laptop and that for good photo editing you need to use a desktop with a calibrated monitor. The calibration can be as simple as using a pro shop and then adjusting your monitor to match the print results they develop, or it can be a seriously high end calibration tool. When I started I sent ten images to the print shop for 8x10s and then when they came back, I adjusted the monitor to match the prints. Next I re-edited the same images to what I wanted them to look like and sent those in for prints and compared them when they came back. Now I know that what I send to them will be fine and I am always happy with their results. You might want to check with my printer, White House Custom Colour as they do a good job and seem to have really good pricing.

Is there a way to put the dead posts in an Archive section that does not allow activity, but can be viewed? Seems like I saw another photo site do something like that to their old content. Just a thought.

This is a hard question for me. I got started in this by a Native American elder who was trying to teach me to slow down and observe the minutia around me. I was driving in the fast lane with tunnel vision like a race car driver and missing much of the world. That was three years ago. I quickly found photography to be an excuse to get out into nature again. So I chase the awesome wildlife shots and really enjoy nature every chance I get, but it is an expensive hobby. I would like to sell some large, fine art prints to offset the future costs of lenses as I won’t be able to afford them without another income stream but sales is really a secondary goal. Just a way to pay for lenses and travel to new places in the USA. What I really need is a benefactor to underwrite my photography expenses! Then life would be simple and I could just focus on the art of things. Too much to ask? Probably!!!

Tom, enjoy the D800. My dream purchase these days is a Canon EF500mm f/4.0 L lens to go on my 7D camera! Maybe some day if I don’t die first. And a really good woman who was naked would be a huge inspiration as well!!! Way to go Tom!!!

I’m really thinking that I will stick to multiple backups on external HDs. I was reading about the mess at MegaUpload yesterday and all of the people stuck with their data unavailable due to the US Governments confiscation of their servers for copyright infringement. The government claims that a large percentage are holding illegal content so they took them offline. Now no one wants to pay to keep them from being erased while the courts decide what to do. The legitimate users are being screwed by all and cannot access their content. I can see all sorts of reasons for users to lose their content through no fault of their own even down to the company having a bad business plan. Better under my control. Good luck to all.

In USA, I use White House Custom Colour at http://www.whcc.com and have been very happy. Prices are lower than retail, service is very good and their large mounted prints are way beyond retail services. They do have a minimum order size of about $12 US but that is usually easy to get (just watch it on small orders when things are on sale). Just upload online and wait for the UPS guy to hit your door in a few days. I have printed 8×10’s (the paper is awesome) and a few 20×30 3/4″ standouts with luster coating. Never been happier with a photo lab.

I’m still stuck with a wireless G connection so I don’t store online. However I just had an external hard drive crash (Seagate 1 TB USB 2.0) yesterday and thankfully all is backed up on another 2 TB external USB 3.0 drive. I have that set to do full backup every Sunday morning about 3 am local time. When I get a better connection will I be able to find online backup in the 300 GB size range??? Will it be affordable? Must be able to do RAW (Canon CR2) plus JPG. Any advice for a new looker?

Bald Eagle Fly-by. This was taken about a month ago. Hopefully the weather will break and let me get out to shoot by middle of next week.

White pelican on take off. They take a while to get airborne. This is from last photo shoot on April first this year.

I agree if you are using that quality. All too often I hear this idea of saving your expensive lens by putting a UV filter in place and then hear that you can get them so cheap on Amazon, that why would you risk lens damage! A ten dollar Tiffen filter will drop the resolution of an L series lens by a large factor! I have followed this debate since I started this path a few years ago and have found that the top photographers that I follow do not like putting any more glass in the system than required and recommend against the UV filters. But I agree that there are just as many that advise you to use them. Personal choice in the end I guess.

As I only use Canon L series lenses, I would never think of putting a cheap piece of glass like a UV filter in the way EXCEPT when I am at a beach with the wind blowing sand about. I also use my lens hoods as they have saved me from lens damage more than once while climbing to that “perfect perspective” to shoot from! Though I must admit that some landscapes or floral shots might be helped by lens flare, etc. Something to think about since the lens hood is automatic by now. Just part of getting things out of the backpack. I do on occasion take landscapes where I use a high quality circular polarizer filter and those would be much easier if I left the hood off. Thanks for getting me thinking about this “habit” I have.
