Hi Jenn @sweetness29157,
Here’s a quick shot of my son, an unwilling model but I got a half-way ok expression out of him for once.
I don’t have a brick wall here but this shows how a very shallow depth of field renders a stone wall when shot at a steep angle.

HI Jenn @sweetness29157,
That’s a cute shot and pretty much the idea.
If you move just bit away from the wall and angle the camera towards the wall so that the end of the wall is just about at the edge of the frame then you’ll be seeing more of the converging lines effect.
The extreme blurriness of the lines is created by having a lens…[Read more]

Hi Jenn @sweetness29157,
Here’s a link to the type of shot I was thinking of, pretty much the same as the example provided by @gordonjames but featuring a person as the subject.

Hi Jenn @sweetness29157,
There’s a shot that’s in the playbook of many portrait and wedding photographers where they have the subject lean against a wall and shot from an extreme angle with a short depth of field – probably f/2.8, f/2, f/1.4 range
You’re close with the third shot, just ask your husband to actually lean against the wall and…[Read more]

Hi Jenn, @sweetness29157
I don’t find myself using program shift much but it’s a great feature.
I tend to have an aperture in mind that I’d like to be using so I go with AV or sometimes when I want to make sure that people will be sharp I’ll use a little fill flash with the camera set to TV and Auto ISO to get a good base exposure at 1/160.…[Read more]

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘remembering the settings’, @sweetness29157. For settings after the deed: they can be found in the properties of the .jpg (most of them), otherwise LR’s histogram displays at least the exposure settings.
For settings during the ‘deed’ there are a few basics: if DOF is your main concern, aperture is your main…[Read more]

@sweetness29157 Ditto on what @aarongeis had said. The worldwide trend (for LR users) seems to be that the guys do 80-90% of the pp work in LR and then use PS for more specialized tasks (I’m also in that group). I find that if you shoot in RAW then you mostly have at least one or two small adjustments to do in pp. LR is good enough for that (lower…[Read more]

I didn’t know what ACR meant, either, @sweetness29157. I don’t have photoshop, but I like the bug image, @nikon-image for tweaking my images. ๐Check It Out

@sweetness29157 An image is “post-processed” the minute it is captured by your camera’s sensor.
That is an interpretation of the scene and the light rendered onto a file and then re-interpreted (post-processed) again when it gets to the screen.
Try to get it as close to perfect in the camera as you can.
Then finish it off in…[Read more]

@sweetness29157 because of the way the digital sensor works most if not all images need to be sharpened. I always run my pics through ACR to help with clarity and contrast. Then the first step in PS is to clean the bugs off of the windshield (my term for cleaning spots cause by dust et on the lens or the sensor itself. After that it just…[Read more]

Hi @sweetness29157,
The biker is almost, but not quite, sharp.
The background is starting to blur.
Perhaps stand a bit further back from the path, so that you can get the entire bike and rider in the frame.
Assuming that bikers will pass at regular intervals try to balance an exposure around 1/30th of a second, the best shutter speed…[Read more]

So sorry, I didn’t get to this in time to help you with the full moon.
The basics are –
Longest lens you have
Tripod
Focus at infinity
f/11
1/125th
ISO 100
Set drive mode to self-timer or use remote trigger
Use Live-View or mirror lock up to reduce the camera shake
Bracket exposure by trying a range…[Read more]

@sweetness29157 Perhaps the best piece of theory to learn is the exposure triangle – it will serve you very well.
Also, did you know that when you put a @ in front of people’s username, then they get a little notification? Like @karamen – It just makes sure they see your update (kind of like Facebook)

Welcome, @sweetness29157! I know that back and forth feeling very well! Looks like you have some wonderful subjects to capture! I like your composition, but I agree about the sharpness, something I had to learn, and sometimes still struggle with. I brace myself and hold my breathe a lot! LOL. Keep at it!
