@osbornezo Hello Mason, Your after image is a world of difference better. A couple quick comments about that are that your clouds are still a bit blown out. Using the Highlights slider in LR might help bring that down to a manageable level (note your histogram and read up on “clipping”). Secondly, Nothing wrong with complete black in an image…[Read more]

Hello Osbornezo: Yes, first thing I see is a slanted horizon. That’s easy to fix. I can see why you chose this spot – very beautiful. You said you felt like something is lacking. Though this is a beautiful place, it feels like a snapshot rather than a compelling image. Partly because everything is so far away. If there are some rocks on the…[Read more]

Yeah, @falx, I’m a stubborn old SOB. Quitting photography? Hm, I’d have to have it replaced by a more powerful compulsion. Check It Out

This is a healthy discussion. I went to a photo critique at a large nature photography camera club as a visitor. The program was similar to the one described by @bcola, but this critic made the crop suggestion on nearly every photo. He would make a few suggestions about focus or distractions, etc, and would inevitably suggest a square crop.…[Read more]

Hey @sschablow, if I stressed about this I wouldn’t be posting here!! My good friend Peter and I toss images back and forth at each other for unvarnished opinion. We are both of the belief that while the image and the art are our own, improvement comes from critical analysis.
I’m happy when anyone takes the time to comment.
I come from an…[Read more] -

Thanks@el-dub and @tobiepsg Like many of the folks here on ST, I’ve been quietly lobbying for the ability to view larger images. This is a reasonable option. Check It Out

@paparazzo Yes, when he died they said go to the light. He’s still trying.
It is a very compelling image by the sheer subject matter of it. Evocative of our own mortality. Nicely handled in difficult circumstances. Check It Out -

I think there is huge potential here, but what really bothers me in this shot more than anything else mentioned above is that the barn seems like it should be the point of focus, yet the fence is overpowering and leads me to the tree on the right – which isn’t very interesting on its own. My eye is confused.
I can see the temptation to go B&W,…[Read more] -

Okay, I like the photo initially, but before I talk about the image itself, please tell us all how you were able to insert your Flickr image into the Shark Tank forum. One of my peeves about this venue is that images are presented too small to analyze carefully. Being able to see your shot on Flickr enlarged is very helpful.
Please share with…[Read more] -

@sschablow @valeryp @travelnguy
I much appreciate all the feedback on this image. In a way, just getting this much attention is good thing. As actress Tallulah Bankhead once said, “I don’t care what they say as long as they talk about me.”Anyway, I do get the message. Crop, crop, crop. and then crop again. I also like @travelnguy‘s…[Read more]

Beautiful scene. The tones and textures in this photo just cry out for B&W. I can certainly appreciate the difficulty gaining access to property that will allow you to walk around where you want. I tend to agree with some other commenters that I’d like to see more of the right building with only a suggestion of the one on the left. Or maybe a…[Read more]

Thanks @hobart and @falx – I get the picture, so to speak. I think the image you are describing makes a “cleaner” result. and @falx that area on the right is particularly interesting because it is largely uncluttered and on the floor where you can’t see here are boards laid out sideways. I just didn’t have a good angle via window to access it.…[Read more]

@falx – Not sure I follow completely. What you’re saying essentially is to crop off the left in increments until I find the perfect balance? if I read this right, you are suggesting that at least the near post (which is really the inside corner of a wall) and maybe the red brick on the left, and so on, may be weaknesses rather than interesting…[Read more]

@bcola – Yes, shot through glass, but it was quite dark outside with no lights on the other side of the street. Plus I put the lens right up against the glass. This was convenient anyway giving me a little bit more stability. It is quite old glass in the windows so I can’t help thinking there is a small amount of distortion from that, but I…[Read more]

@falx The wonderful thing about NIK is that the price has dropped from over $600 for the full suite of modules to about $135 for the whole thing. Google bought it and is just throwing it out there. They seem to still be supporting it and making enhancements. That’s a good thing. Check It Out

@tobiepsg – Yes, that does make sense and is exactly why I am posting here to get that kind of feedback. Of course, we are all going to shoot what we like and create the kind of images that turn us on. But peer reviews like this is a way of having many eyes.
I really appreciate the input. Check It Out -

@wardsway Wow! With an experience like that I might be a little “gun” shy myself. I am no lawyer, but I would be willing to go out on a limb and say your rights were infringed. One more voice added in support of nikon-nut. The original portrait orientation with the full sky is a powerful image. Yes, I agree too that a little crop at the bottom just like you did in edit #3, but leave the sky.
