You’ve just made me realise when last I’ve taken a bird shot. Going to spend a few days in a local reserve next week so maybe I’ll return with a few respectable ones… 😉
The sparrow is really singing his heart out, isn’t he? 🙂

That is gorgeous, Diane. I always do a double take when you post robins, as ours are so different! We had a “flock” of robins about three weeks ago – I didn’t know they flocked, as such. I will try and dig out one of the photos to show the distant cousins to yours.

Allows Edits? YesWent Birding on Sunday, Sorta cold, Very windy, trees are just beginning to bud out, Snowed again on Saturday and more expected tonight and next Sunday. All we saw were Crows, Mallards, and Canadian Geese, an some Woodpeckers we ignored the waterfowl, the crows stayed buried in the trees and couldn’t get a clear angle on them.
Wood Peckers (Click Photos to Super size)
These Nut Hatches were about 20 feet in the Air and and we were about 20 feet from the tree.
And these Northern Flickers were close to 70 feet off the ground in a Giant Cottonwood tree and we Were about that far back from the tree. Look close there are 2 of them.

Good captures of the nuthatches Robert…they move so quickly. If it stops raining this week we will have to get out as well. Migration time is just starting here in Southern Ontario. Just a few weeks before the leaves hide all the activity.

Thank you @Tersha.
I took this shot around noon hour on a bright, cloudless, sunny day. I know that the ideal rule for photography is “shoot to the right”… But sometimes I purpposely shoot to the ‘left’. And this is one of the examples.
Here’s a screen shot of the LR’s histogram from the original image:
And here’s a copy of the unprocessed original image:
Capture Time: 12:32:33 PM – April 2012
Exposure: 1/3200 sec at f/4.5 (I used the high shutter speed to reduce the ambient light)
ISO: 500 (not sure why I had the ISO so high)
focal legth: 180mmAs you can see, minimal processing was required to get the background black (in my LR, the background is a dark gray, unlike the Flikr version which is more black) and bring out the highlights in the owl, and finally the vertical crop.

An unexpected bonus on my Sunday afternoon drive 3 days ago. The Cape Vulture swooped over the car. I grabbed my camera, jumped out and it came around once more, close enough for me to take a shot. It’s a juvenile with colours a little darker than its parents.

I have been on stakeout since Easter morning to catch this guy (okay, maybe not the whole time!) I always have a hard time with the exposure so I was pleased to read a Lightstalking article on metering recently – it helped I think! Anyway, first hummer of the spring for us. He guards the feeder watchfully but no others have competed for it yet.
Rufous Hummingbird (I am pretty sure…it is easily mistaken for Allen Hummingbird so I may be corrected)

Thank you Tobie and Diane. I think he may have found a girlfriend, as there was a female in the tree this morning…time to get back out there!

White-bellied Sunbird.
Ironic that he’s looking for the sweet stuff from the flowers of the excessively bitter aloe plant! 🙂
A bit of extra effort paid off here. The left is actually the shade side with the sun coming from the right. This caused a few failures the previous day at the same spot and same time so I placed a 600W strobe at about 45 degrees on my left, about half powered and 3m from the plant.

Allows Edits? YesGreat Tobie, I’ve been toying with the idea of flash with the hummingbirds.
-
May 28, 2017 at 1:27 am #299923
For hummingbirds a flash or two is an absolute necessity if you want to freeze the wings during flight. I have once read an article that they’re actually attracted by flash lights so you might find yourself in an interesting situation! I’m looking forward to seeing your results!
-

I’ve used a flash, or two, when photographing hummingbirds. They do react to them at first (startle and buzz away a bit) but then they seem to get used to them. Definitely a must for freezing the wings. And the light helps showcase their lovely iridescent feathers in a way that daylight does not.

I had wondered about using a flash with our feeder which is in the shade for morning feeds but had not tried it. It certainly worked for you Tobie! Does it scare the bird away?
-
May 27, 2017 at 9:16 am #299874
I was wondering about the same thing Rob, but although he sometimes shows a reaction (a quick flick with the wings) when it flashes, it does not bug him at all. Not sure if it’s the same for all species but – if we don’t try, we wouldn’t know! 🙂

Bin Chicken…lol…had to look that one up.
Alternate colloquial names include “bin chicken”, “dump chook”, “trash vulture”, “Bankstown bin diver”, or “tip turkey”, from its habit of rummaging in garbage,

He’s really trying hard! 🙂
We also have a few types of thrushes but they’re mostly single (olive) colored without speckles. In fact, this one is quite special to me as it was my first ever shot with a DSLR – a Kurrichane Thrush.

So @tersha after posting the above, I remembered this Groundscraper Thrush which I’ve snapped a couple of years back. It has a few similarities with yours:

The Song Thrush that I posted sits in the same tree every morning and evening, and sings his heart out, it’s a beautiful song! -

@tersha our thrushes are mostly seen on the ground, turning over leaves in search of edible critters. They don’t really ‘sing’ but do have distinct calls.
I took a bunch of shots at our local botanical garden over the weekend but then my laptop crashed on me just after importing them. I’m taking it in to the repair shop today – hope it’s something minor and if not, that I can save the data on my hard drive… 🙁
