The Empty Yet Not-Empty Chair
I ran across an article today about Vincent van Gogh’s Chair that led me to research the genre of conceptual photography. For those of you love conceptual photography, I’d love to see some of your favorites shots including selfies (Patrick) such as van Gogh’s painting of his favorite chair which reflected the important elements of his life that made him Vincent. And how interesting to know that his companion-facing painting was of Paul Gaugin’s chair (his current roommate at the time in the Yellow House in Arles). I don’t have any shots to share of my own yet, but it’s definitely an area I plan to explore for metaphor and storytelling.

Here’s my first attempt trying my hand at layering memories and symbols of the time I spent taking care of my 90-year old father on hospice in his tiny rustic mountain cabin. It was an extremely emotional time for me but in the end it became the most beautiful and loving goodbye.

It’s always hard caring for a loved in their final days. My heart goes out to you, very difficult. But the image is perfect.

Thank you for your kind words, Paul. The hospice people gave me a book on what was to come to help me know how to care for my dad – it took me three days before I could even open it. But at some point, I decided the best way to get through it was to turn tragedy into a gift for both of us by creating the most loving goodbye.

Allows Edits? NoHere is my attempt at Conceptual Photography Marty
The message I tried to convey was the empty cross as Jesus is no longer on the cross – the nails that hung him on the cross with one of the nails pointing to the tomb in the back as the stone was rolled away revealing it is empty; that he arose and is not dead.

Wow, great concept and execution! And I must say those nails are terrifying. Every element has its place in telling the story and your lighting is beautiful. Well-done and thanks for sharing @frogdaily

I entered this in the Resilience contest but feel that it qualifies as conceptual photography (with a spin) so am also posting it here. It is obviously digitally manipulated by the tweak to one building but was done in the interest of making a point conceptually. I’m reminded of my past days in telecom when I was the head of the Communications team and came face-to-face with corporate spin. When the president’s PR person was on vacation, the prez contacted me to have someone from my team help with her current PR needs. I asked her for more detail. “Do you want the reality or the “spin?” she asked. Essentially, she wanted a lie so people wouldn’ know about the truth. And that was the day I learned to question anything coming through corporate PR that is most likely sanitized to hide the truth and be more palatable to consumers of the message.
Corporate Spin

Nothing wrong with digital manipulation. Virtually all images are manipulated. Although I understand that you’re referring to the portion on the left.
Corporate Spin, or Corporate Speak is all about saying what the public wants to hear, or as you suggest, not telling the truth. And surprisingly, if Corporations say the correct words, people believe, or accept, what is said.
The image is very nicely done!
-
March 15, 2024 at 3:34 pm #523408
Thank you, Paul! The sad thing about my corporate spin example is that the bad behavior of one department was covered up with the lie that too many “family and friends” images were being shared through our business emails that necessitated company buying a new server. So employees were banned from sharing personal photos that had nothing to do with their bad behavior.

I could come up with an interesting storyline/perspective for this image, but…
I was really just experimenting with RGB separation.

Great concept, Paul. I agree, it’s very intriguing with lots of possible story lines. I wonder, the stories we tell ourselves or the stories others tell about us? Makes me think of shifting perspectives and realities. Going with your experiment with RBG separation, maybe our shifting roles and identities? Great food for thought

Thank you for the kind words Frogdaily, Patrick and Marty.
I like all your ideas Marty. With the last one probably being my favourite because as one traverses life, one’s responsibilities change continuously as we take on new roles and then various life events both change and mold us.
-
March 15, 2024 at 4:46 pm #523429
So true, Paul. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s so true for all of us. I think the key to life is adapting to changes as they come, hopefully for the better. As my dad told me near the end of his life, “It’s said that the only two constants in life are death and taxes. But I will add one thing: There will always be change.” May we all rise to meet the challenges!

I took this photo of an unknown seated man at the arboretum. I keep wondering what he was pointing at/to on his right hand, what was he thinking about? Was he waiting for or remembering someone?

Riffing off of Patrick’s poem about the two feathers concept, I thought I’d experiment with adding a favorite poem on top of this photo.
Nothing Gold Can Stay
I can see I’m going to have to work at combining symbols and metaphors, but it’s a good challenge for me! Thanks to all for playing 🙂

Allows Edits? Nothis was with a photoshop brush.
or you could use a layer as an overlay. if you’ve ever seen a photo with an old paper look, they’re just dropping the old paper image on top of the photo as a layer and adjusting the opacity and the blend mode to soft light.

Thanks @martye.
I’m guessing that you don’t watch many Pixar movies?
The first is character is Wall-E from the movie of the same name and the second is Dug from the movie “Up.”

It’s been a long time since I saw Wall-E when my grandchildren were small lol. Wall-E was the first thing that came to mind, but I wasn’t sure. Thanks for the reminder!
