It’s a difficult capture because you have bright sun combined with a lot of shade. Taking it from a different angle may have helped. I was sure it was a terrific image but because of the bright sun, it was pretty much impossible to make out any detail. If you shot it in raw and IF you have Photoshop, you can use “fill light” to bring light to the dark areas. I hope it’s already that I downloaded it and did a quick edit – in Photoshop – using “Shadows and Highlights” – and then did a couple of other little steps. Using fill light is, in my opinion, better than using the shadows and highlights edit – but we use what we can – right? Nice shot!
I like them both and really like applying the sketch effect to some of my images. But I think in this case, I prefer the color image because of the way the light sort of dances around in it! Pulling out some of the detail that’s lost in the shadows on the barrel – and recapturing some of the detail outside that window (or door) might make it even stronger, though. Really do like this image a lot!
I really like the old barn – and would probably crop the image tighter to bring even more focus to it. Also, you might want to think of doing it in sepia to age it some. Lovely shot!
Quickly tried a little red wagon picture I found on line – just to experiment. Also tried an antique fire truck – an image I took several years ago (see my reply to Dahlia). Tried to make it look like he was turning in at the gate. Not a great job but all I can do for now.
I don’t have much time to play with this right now, but quickly tried dropping in a couple of different things. This one is an old (antique) fire truck that was sitting out in a field that I photographed several years ago. Placed that down where the roads intersect. The other one is a little red wagon with a child in it – closer in – and that image is in my reply to Mistyisle.
Thank you, Mistyisle! I like that idea and might just do that! Will have to figure out what I might drop into the picture….and exactly where! Probably won’t have much time to be working on it soon because I have family flying in – and they’ll be staying several weeks!!
Thank you, Graham. I’ll be mulling this over!!
Love the feedback and have no issue with my Images being edited for demonstration purposes. Will play with it some more this evening!
Appreciate your feedback very much…however this was intended to look like a painting. Not to everyone’s liking, but I personally love the effect on certain pictures.
Love the feedback – thank you all!!!
No offence taken…..thank you for your input!
Thank you, Dahlia. No, no story will be provided for the competition. They judge on impact, creativity, composition, and technical mastery. (That battlefield is very familiar to those in our camera club – and the judges – since it’s located close by.) There really is nothing in the entire area – aside from the canons – that would indicate it was a battlefield. But there are some great split rail fences I’ve played with – and they date back quite a ways, I think.
I really like what you are trying to accomplish – but I’m not certain this image tells the story. I think if you could see the eyes of the lady with glasses it might be a much stronger picture. But from my perspective, and IMHO, I’m not sure if she might be looking at something else altogether. You were there and saw it – but when looking at the image it’s not clear.
Thank you, Rob. The feedback is much appreciated!
The only one I know of – though I’m sure there are others – is in Photoshop. In the Edit mode you select Transform and then Skew – and pull the corners in the direction that will straighten the sides. I did this on really fast just to demonstrate – just it usually takes some other tweaking to get it right.
Like Dahlia, I like the image very much – but I think a little increased contrast would make the lioness “pop”. Maybe darken the tree bark and the sky. Beautiful animal!
This is a real winner and I haven’t much to offer. The only thing I would do if it was mine would be to crop a little off of the bottom and on the right (where it’s a little lighter). But over all, IMHO it’s simply beautiful!
I really like this image and particularly the fact that it’s in black and white. And the comments made above are all good, solid critiques. One thing that always pulls my eye in, in a negative way, is when the sides of a building are distorted to one degree or another. But since no one else has mentioned it, I guess it’s just me. Good image!
