Thanks for the input. I like the shot but i couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. You are both right it needed something different with its composure. I like the closer version it does both with getting ride of the railing and high light the sunrise. Not so much over the top though. Thanks Erik and Simon.
Yes it does look better. If you are trying to separate the foreground and background try a lower f stop to blur one or the other. I know it not a true landscape shot were everything should be in focus it would show a focal point. I do think that a flash would have made this shot better.
Yes that is the computer software that I use. I shot in RAW and than I can alter with limits using Capture NX2. I don’t use Lightroom or any program like that to change what I shot.
I am using Nikon Capture NX2, so I don’t think that is something that I can do. I’ll have to look into it.

The next shot I did had what I think you were looking for. What do you think of this one?I think the fore ground blends in too much to the background. Maybe take the shot lower.
Neither, I use Nikon Capture NX2

I changed the exposure. What do you think now. The rider is saluting the judge that is why her head is down.
Love the first border but everthing insde should be a lot more blured or deleted.
After reading all of this garblygoop, I mean in depth explanations, I still agree with caimi, Some photo look better with a black border.
No matter what other well know Photographer have done in the past a photo and its border is an expression of the photographer.
I haven’t read any other comments about the photo, so good job caimi and keep the border.I do think the horse and rider are balanced. Head down back straight. I don’t like the tree in the foreground
and the sign drags my attention. I also like the black border, I do the same sometimes.I am a horse owner and photographer and it sounds like you are as well. He was really trying to get to my horse that was put close to draw his attention. I never saw the gravel or that the color blended thanks I’ll watch out for that.
I don’t have Photo Shop all my work is shot in RAW and the post processed with Nikon Capture NX2. I am working on watching the ISO usually it is high for the ring work when the horses are moving. And yes this shot is intended to show the achievement of the rider. Thanks for your comments.
I am new to this type of Photography, I usually do equine photos and by the sound of the coments I should stick with that. I didn’t realize that one photo would cause a culture melt down!
The photo is in focus on my end. I did use Nikon Capture NX2 in post processing and it appears that when it was converted to a jpeg it lost something. I will have to do more research on this problem.
I wanted to show that she was on a dock, but didn’t realize that it was taking away from the shot. Possibly increase the apatuer to blur the house in the back.
Thanks for your input. I never heard of using an ISO so low for night time photography. The next clear night I will try those settings.
My settings where F/5.6, 10s and an ISO of 2000. Unfourtanly this is the county the light is from our local fire hall.
I like #2, looking at it from a creative standpoint. I like the in focus, out of focus and the color contrast, all work well. You did state it was a landscape competition and I would not consider the buildings a landscape in #3.
