PS. That’s exciting about the stage pass – do you get a fancy lanyard to wave in front of the ordinary people đŸ™‚

Hmmm…thanks for the US info and the Oz links, definitely some food for thought. I’ll be looking into it a bit more (in the meantime I’ve found some heated discussion about it on Flickr – http://www.flickr.com/groups/aussiestreet/discuss/72157626230532533/) – but have to admit I don’t think I’m much clearer on the whole thing at this stage. It seems to boil down to whether the pics are considered journalism, amateur photos or for commercial gain.
What I do know is that a previous employer (local newspaper) was sued after legally interviewing and publishing a story and pic about an autistic teen, my current editor won’t touch photos of kids without written consent (verbal won’t do), a pro photographer mate working for a newspaper was recently abused by a random (adult) bloke who happened to be in a street shot, most kids dance schools won’t allow parents to video or photography dance concerts…and that I need a “working with children” police check to be a parent helper on a school excursion with my OWN kids.
And I thought you Americans were more uptight about this stuff!Hmmm…thanks for the US info and the Oz links, definitely some food for thought. And I thought you Americans were more uptight about this stuff! Thanks…is the cherry pic too washed out do you think? I didn’t use a flash at all on this one, but might have to invest in one over the weekend (oh dear, it’ll be tough spending money on camera gear…again :)).
The cafe I’m working for have a nice backdrop – overlooks a lake – so hopefully we won’t need too much cropping. But if all else fails my “stylist” is also our graphic designer (he’s actually only coming cos he can smell a free feed!)Thanks…is the cherry pic too washed out do you think? I know here in Oz we don’t dare publish anything that can identify anyone under 18yo and will think twice before printing pics of some adults (I’m a journo). Would the event have some sort of disclaimer for people registering?

Great, thanks! The 18-55 I can get down to f/4.0 and I’ll practice with the focus points and light settings. (I’m driving my family mad photographing everything I cook before I let them eat it!) I think you’re spot on – food photography seems to be in the styling, so I’ll dress things up a bit…and as it’s Italian food that should work well.

Whaddya think to this practice shot?Don’t know if Melbournians are generally more excitable when it comes to photography, but our local westie markets are chockers full of photographers selling prints – at least 10 stands at the market I regularly go to. Some are pretty good, but have to say (at the risk of sounding snobby) some need to pay more attention to Lightstalking tutes!

Weird flash back moment…I recently walked in the Relay for Life here in Melbourne in March – very similar, but much, much smaller charitable event for cancer. I took pics for a magazine I write for (usual guy wasn’t available) sent copies to organisers and have since been asked to photograph (and walk!) next year.
I’ll look forward to seeing your pics for some inspiration…great opportunity for you and I’m sure you’ll do a great job.
