Sorry @tersha I am new to this website and thought you commented on another photo so please disregard that last message…
This was also shot in studio at a shutter speed of 200 and aperture of F8. I had one 400 alienb light and had her legs tilted up. This image was put into a series about tension and vulnerability. My subject was nude and I had her grab at areas of her body she didn’t like or that she did like. I instructed her to do this because that is when we become vulnerable, when we show others our flaws.

@tersha This was originally inspired in one of my classes at school, History of Photography, and we were learning about movement in photography. We learned about Eadweard Muybridge (The series of the horse movement) and it really intrigued me. I used to dance when I was younger and I remember the hours of dedication I would put into it and how the motion of everything was so fast. I did more research on “Akinetoposia”- its a deficiency in the ability to see movement progress in a normal fashion. It’s been described in the same way as those pictures, where patients see movement as “shots” rather than fluid motion. It can be induced by high doses of certain antidepressants, and is associated with damage to the middle temporal area of the brain cortex. So for this photo I really wanted to capture the look of concentration, how each step you must be fully extended, etc.
I was in studio with a black wall and was using one 800 Alien B to the right of my subject. I had my camera on a tripod and dragged my shutter to approximately 2 seconds, aperture at F8 and ISO 200. I had an assistant press the flash several time throughout the exposure as the dancer moved.

All I did was drag my shutter to about.. 2 seconds maybe and with a studio light just kept pressing the flash so it would freeze the dancer!
