I like it a lot! It’s a real keeper in my opinion. Compositionally, I think it’s just fine and I wouldn’t do much else with it myself.
@pmarione, I’d be interested in how you go about correcting one wall that might be out of plumb in an ancient town?

It’s an arty abstract image. It’s what YOU want it to be. The “horizon” doesn’t have to be anything you don’t want it to be, and that’s that. I like the idea that it throws you off balance. Of course, a straight horizon may work just as well but it’s really all about expression. As long as it’s your expression and what you do is done on purpose,…[Read more]

Thanks @admin, I’ll definitely chase them up.
Yes, very true on the theft side of things. I was having that chat the other day with my sister, who’s doing the website and we actually agreed we’ll never stop theft, if people want it enough. I don’t really care about them though. It’s the honest, potential clients I’m really after. I think I…[Read more]

Website PhotosHi there everyone,
I’m more of a Shark Tank guy and this is my first post here. I have a question and was wondering if there are any professional or decent amateur photographers in here who can help me.
I’m in the process of getting a website created, as I’m one of those people who hope to at least cover the cost of his hobby…[Read more]

Simon Cordingley replied to the topic Lighthouse Window in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 10y, 6mo ago
I agree with @pmarione, the window needs to have equal white space, top to bottom and side to side. It also looks like there is some slight perspective distortion going on, which should be easy to fix in Lightroom. Just go to the Develop module and down to the Lens Corrections. Click on “Enable Profile Corrections” and also try clicking on the…[Read more]

I think I see what you’re doing. At this small size it’s a little difficult though. You seem to have stitched two (?) images, side by side and created one. Is that right? I think it’s a good concept and it’s useful to fiddle around in Photoshop like that, but I don’t think it works in this instance.
Without your description, my eye was just…[Read more]

You need to get Lightroom 5 and fix the lens distortion. It’s relatively cheap, a great piece of software and an easy thing to do. That’ll fix the warping and curved horizon. You’ll also be able to easily level the horizon, which is tilted to the left in this case and play with colors, exposure levels, contrast etc. etc. etc.
Until then I…[Read more]

I agree with you there @gallopingphotog.
On the colour side though, I did actually purposefully desaturate it. The original is a bit too orange for my liking, even when I play around with the white balance. I actually like the split tone effect and am probably not going to change it much. I do doubt if it’ll make the cut for my website, when I…[Read more]

A little. I can totally understand that conditions weren’t perfect. To get a great shot in imperfect conditions probably requires a combination of great skill, great timing, great patience, great equipment and a little luck. Something very few of us have. I certainly don’t anyway.

ALL my photos are of wildflowers on the side of the road or along railway lines. That’s just about the only place you can find them nowadays in Australia, unless you want to go for a few hours drive somewhere.

Well I think that’s very true too. I guess that partly explains the inverse price/taste relationship for many fine art images compared to mall art images.

Very true.
I actually like the ditch weeds better as well, that’s why I didn’t bother putting it up on the forum. Fog is a funny thing. I guess sometimes it just doesn’t penetrate into the forests, or there’s not enough open space for it to show clearly.

I’m not a wildlife photographer, so please take this with a pinch of salt.
I just think the image is too “middling”, in that it’s a bit flat colourwise (maybe underexposed as @pmarione suggests) and the cub is neither close enough in frame to fill it or far enough away for good context. If you have enough megapixels to play with, maybe a crop…[Read more]

I’ve figured The Shark Tank is good for me, as I’m prone, (ok, very prone) to defensiveness and insecurity when it comes to photography. With the new “rules”, at least I can be assured of honest thoughts and opinions. When the photo’s good, and people say so then I can feel it really is (even if I already feel it is). If it’s not up to scratch or…[Read more]

Wahlenbergia sp. by Simon Cordingley on Light Stalking
I’m not pretending to be an expert in macro, although I have had many botanical images used in Australian State Government environmental publications. I don’t really take isolated botanical close-ups like this anymore, as I’m trying to “artify” myself.
What I hope to show you though, is…[Read more]
