One of the reasons detail, sharpness and quality is lost when converting or exporting from RAW to any other format (except TIFF), is that most other formats decreases the BIT Depth to 8, where RAW can be anything from 12bit to 16bit. EXR is another format that can be up to 32bit. As you would imagine converting down will introduce artefacts if care isn’t taken when adjusting things, no matter what software is used.
Being a Linux (Debian) devotee, I too prefer RAW Therapee. One of the reasons detail, sharpness and quality is lost when converting or exporting from RAW to any other format (except TIFF), is that most other formats decreases the BIT Depth to 8, where RAW can be anything from 12bit to 16bit. The Advanced Digital SLR video contains a full explanation and demo of Light Painting. It’s an amazing medium.
I agree with you there toadhollow, if we can’t protect our work with 100% certainty, we should at the least make it harder for the thieves.

Great links, thanks for the share.
I guess also, with using Watermarks, I’m coming from a Web Design and Client Proofing arena. In the respect I’ve had Designs for Layout’s I’d done taken to another Web Designer who was cheaper. In essence the client didn’t pay for the Design, and took the work elsewhere, which is there choice to use whatever Designer they choose, but taking a Proof done by one business to be copied and used by another is a but rude.
Also goes to show how unprofessional, and unoriginal some Web Devs can be.
So that’s my reason for Watermarking across the whole of an image, if not to totally stop other stealing work, but to at least making it harder.
On Photo’s though, I’m with drec, helps bring more work, and at the least notoriety, hehe.
If someone, wanted to use any of my photo’s I have no issue with that, but a small credit, and link to me, would be appreciative. I don’t expect them to have the time to ask.
Oj, and I pretty much like everyone’s work here, so much inspiration, I believe every picture has a meaning and story behind it.

Yes, I agree with you, but having your work ripped like that, and especially without consent or recognition is heart breaking. It’s for those reasons why I’ve implemented the ability to read Exif Information into our Content Management System, along with the option to Watermark images. I have recently discovered though, that even if someone does take someone’s images, that if they upload them to a Website, and the images are modified in any way using PHP, that the Exif information is destroyed. So even if that data is purposely placed into image for the soul purpose of tracking, well, it’s a waste of time for that purpose.
