A funny thing happened today, I was looking through a book, “The Joy Of Photography” published by Kodak and came upon this picture: (sorry the image is terrible, but you can see why I came to post this)

Your shot looks like a fun snapshot for a memory book in terms of subject matter.
Composition is broken up nicely in the frame, but there is not enough variation in tone. The background is flat, and the foreground is not well lit, flattening it as well. Squint… how many values do you see? I count 3, maybe four if you count the gray bird torso. The blue background – 1; white tail – 2; and everything else is nearly black -3.
The lighting, composition and content all contribute to it looking like a snapshot.

The seagull’s eyes and textures around his skull are compelling, but that is such a small part of the picture.

Cropped more, darkened background and worked on the color. It could match better with more time in editing, but I think I have gotten what most of you have said and it has helped a lot. Thanks!

I think there is just too much in the background. It doesnt add to it. The light grid shape on the left is bothering now.

The photshop work was obviously not careful, I just wanted to flesh out your ideas.

Color crossing, what is that? I will look it up, I suppose. What color problem do you see with the edited version? The now purplish cabinets in the back are a honey brown in real color, far closer in the original image than the edit. I think I went too far into cyan-and magenta. I hadn’t seen the yellow cast before. Thanks, @pmarione!

The only editing I did was color balance and didn’t touch grain, perhaps reducing the file size for second image reduced the grain as a side effect? The first is untouched on flickr, the second is “save for the webbed.”

Did a little color editing, trying to remove grain made it grainier…. not sure how to fix that.

            Thanks!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the “tank” as a platform.

This is scanned film, as scanned. I assume the film responded to the flash that way. The colors of the background are accurate. The color cast wasn’t intentional, but it could certainly be adjusted in Photoshop. I will try that and see what comes of it.

Ugh, Portrait for your opinions was supposed to be the title….
