Now you’re just encouraging me, to carry on. Receiving comments is terribly Eggciting. I’m positively eggstatic that someone took the time to scramble a few words by way of reply.
However, that’s probably ‘un oeuf’ for now (I’m runny out of yolks) – this is eggsactly the perfect eggsample of how over-easy it is to go off topic.I need to hatch some more ideas instead of poaching them.
Ok it’s not the weekend any more and easter has long gone, but…..
Having shelled out to Egscape the evil clutch, our 3 intrepid Eggsplorers have set off into the wilderness, chased by the other 9 of their brood they soon discovered that the big wide world is certainly no yolk. Hungry, they decided to turn their hands to poaching, hoping that they would’t get caught, as that’s a capital crime and they would get fried for sure. Will they crack under the pressure, are they too chicken to continue their journey? – Tune in next week to find out.
I probably need to get out more……..
Thanks for taking the time to look at this an offer your thoughts. The mirror was niggling me as well but I couldn’t really figure why, I’m going to have to re-shoot with the top in (reflection wise may need to be a little creative in photoshop).
I had a nightmare trying to level this, the tripod said it was level but when I started processing it was off, I thought I’d straightened it based on the floor, but the wall was out, not sure if it’s lens distortion (not something I’ve noticed previously on this lens) or my house really is wonky. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the re-shoot.
Bottle wise, I’m afraid I knocked it over trying to get in position and beat the timer. I never even noticed it was still sloshing about until I started to try and straighten the image. I’ll have to be a little more careful next time.
Thanks again for the comments, always appreciated.
Cheers
DaveHi Steven,
That’s dedication at it’s very best, and had the weather held I think this would have been an excellent shot. Compositionally I think you nailed it but the combination of persistent rain and low light has combined to thwart your efforts and lefty you with a shot that is a little soft.If I were being exceptionally picky the blown out sky is a little distracting as is the post in the centre of the frame but that’s taking it to the extreme. Had this been sharper I don’t think I’d have even noticed.
hope this helps and best regards
DaveHi,
Such a cheeky grin and obvious merriment should probably be taken more of an advantage of. I think that the desire to have a degree of contextual information in this image has led to something that’s compositionally awkward. as others have mentioned, there’s the horizontal levelling that’s a bit of an issue (although in fairness it does work in some contexts) but that alone I don’t think is the issue. It looks to me that you were just below eye level and slightly off to the side and can’t help thinking that if you’d crouched a little higher, and taken a step or so to the left, the level wouldn’t have been so pronounced, and feet, head and hands would be back in perspective again. This would have left you with perhaps more options as to position within the frame and a better view on what else to include or not.
I think if it were me, I would probably have moved closer/zoomed in for a headshot on this one with either a reflector, or a little fill flash to add catchlights if possible.
Hope this doesn’t come across as too harsh, and would like to stress that as a personal photograph it’s spot on, it just isn’t really portfolio material.
The best bit is, you’ll have an almost limitless opportunity to keep at it an re-shoot over the years- It’s only when they get to their teens they become camera shy…..
Firstly, apologies for not returning to thank you for the feedback sooner – Having a work nightmare this week and been offline for what feels like a lifetime.
Compositionally, @mc-fowler and @haychmack and @hcreations I think you all hit the nail on the head and it’s something I’ll definitely be concentrating on in future. I obviously like this image, but more because of what it means to me personally rather than what it actually looks like I guess. there’s always been some niggles and it’s good to have an honest opinion from like minded critics to actually force one to focus.
Processing wise, @admin I’m sorry to say that this was intentional – I was going for a gritty look, but may have overcooked it (a lot) The histogram for this particular image is nasty, but was deliberately ignored. Again, it’s good to have someone actually point out that sometimes, what you see as the creator isn’t necessarily what others may see.
Thanks again for the feedback
DaveIt is hard to put your finger on but agree that compositionally it just doesn’t draw you in. Whilst the eye adhere’s to the ‘rules’ the image overall just seems to be bang in the middle of the frame Your eye is naturally drawn to the white of the pelican, and I think in this case that there’s just too much of it.
I’ve tried looking at it with different crops and unless you’re zoomed right in on the head there’s not really much there that give the ‘wow’ you’re looking for.

November 25, 2011 at 9:08 am in reply to: Weekend Photography Challenge #56 CLOSE-UP or MACRO #76388Hi All,
Happy Friday !!Nothing unusual other than having the flash off camera on a ttl cord.
Settings were Aperture Priority (to save me having to mess with the flash settings manually) at f20 for a larger DOF. Handheld with the flash in one hand and the camera in the other.Kit wise these were shot on a Canon 30D, with a 50mm f1.8 attached via a 20mm Kenko extension tube. Manually focussed by leaning back and forth slightly.
For the first one, I held the flash directly underneath the flower (A Gerbera Daisy). Could probably do with some tweaking to recover some of the Stamen detail but I think the focus was a bit off and it’s not as sharp as it should be. However, because of the soft light through the petals I think I got away with it to a degree……
For this one, the light (flash) was held above and left of the Flower for a more traditional / even spread.
Took them earlier in the week, but will definitely be playing with the tubes again over the weekend.

@tomdinning I think sir that the self portraits I posted a while ago were more than enough for the members here. As I recall the topless nature of them may have been a contributory factor to the global increase in migranes. I’m sorry to admit also that most of my friends are indeed ugly as well. Despite this, I often find that their wrinkles, frowns and other camera induced deformities does give their portraits a certain eye catching something. Despite this, I’ll not be posting any of those today. I have one special and also attractive friend who I recently had the pleasure of spending some time with. We ended up at a local forest/country park with some runny Brie and cold drinks and had an impromptu picnic, sharing a few laughs along the way.
As always, the camera was with me, unusually I actually used it and was rather glad I did. Also Have this one from the same picnic……

@tomdinning – I think you could be on to something there. Been wondering about the odd looks I get from the fairer sex for some time now. It’s either that or I’m on the cusp of that age where you become completely invisible to them. No scanning no rejection, nada. Been looking forward to that birthday for a while, it’ll really help indoors….
@alexsolla – Great shot but have to say I’m ecstatic I don’t work for any of your insurance companies. I’d also be a little subdued if I lived next door, though I suspect (or hope) your not that scary in real life !
@admin – Is it possible to change usernames (thread hijack apologies) – Not sure what posessed me to use a moniker I’ve had since my first ever hotmail account way back before the waybackmachine was required.

@tomdinning Tom, my apologies, I completely forgot about Christine. Thankfully the Canon will help, but you might wish to mention that I puff like an old train, leak far too frequently and the bits removed in post would save a few whales if anyone decided to make candles from them. I will however try and remain clothed for any future posts.
