I studied photography at uni quite a few years back, but I never went professional. Now I mostly do phone photography because I believe the best camera is the one you actually take with you.
I relied on it almost entirely when I last travelled, and even though you don’t have as much flexibility for framing etc, I find it perfect for quickly capturing moments that I don’t get with a big camera.
That said, I did take a 360° camera too, which was small enough to be convenient and made for some really awesome location photos. I love that because you capture a whole sphere you can compose it after.
But I’m also hoping this forum will inspire me to take my DSLR out for a spin more often.

Welcome Kim! I’ve found this site a great place to grow – especially the shark tank, where I think I learned the most about my photography. I took a class a few years ago, and it was very helpful, but while a class gave me access to just one teacher for a short while, this site offers helpful advice from several experts for free!

Hello Kim , Welcome to the Ls community forum and nice to know a little about you and your photographic journey so far .. I hope you can get inspired to give the DSLR a spin from the community 🙂 but like you say the one you carry in your pocket can sometimes be all you need.

Oh, I have a collection of manual film cameras too. Some are medium format, a couple are polaroids. I even have a box brownie that belonged to my grandfather. I have a couple of antiques with bellows on them.
I don’t really use them because film is so expensive and difficult to buy, but I have developed black and white film before and I’d like to do it again one day. But I do love medium format (or even large format!) transparencies and working with them again is on my to do list too.

I feel like part of it is there is less pressure. If I use my DSLR I want it to be a great shot and I’ll have to take loads and then spend time choosing and editing them.
But if I’m on my phone I know it won’t be great quality, so it’s just about capturing the moment and the vibe and if my in phone editing is a bit heavy handed, well, that’s just part of the charm.

Welcome, Kim, and its is great to see your contributions. I read that you are from Brisbane, such a lovely city. We visited from across the Ditch in late July 2019 for a full week. We had just mainly passed through en route to Noosaville and Cairns, so decided to make a specific trip to experience all the attractions.
