THROWDOWN…. Self Portraits

Last weekend, I was hired by the promoters of the annual Park Avenue Festival in Rochester, to take pictures of the event. Wandering around, I spotted myself in these painted mirrors on the wall of one of the many craft booths. I loved that I was able to see my feet in the bottom mirror too. I don’t do self portraits very often, but I really liked this one.

I would love to see some creative self portraits by other photographers. I think it’s a fascinating genre.

This is from a few years ago at our friends log cabin in Maine. Mount Washington is behind me, and it reflected beautifully in their front windows.

Rarely do I get on the “other side of the lens”, and I have nothing to match what you’ve posted already. But, my avatar is a self portrait I did just playing with light, my remote release, and of course my Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Here’s the only other I have; some young guy from 1971 or so (geez, I feel old. No — geez, I AM old!!!!!). The negative was lost who knows how long ago. This is a poor scan from a mediocre print I made back when.

@mikell, the vibrant colors of the hydrangeas and the crackled frame around the mirrors really make your selfie come to life!

I just loved the look of the “old” photo. I wasn’t too much younger in 1971, so to me classic just means having lasting significance or worth. 😉

I love the low key lighting in both, and the expression in the first.

I lately I tried for a neutral face but always have some look that I didn’t intend. I wan’t to try and practice some low key soon, but the lens doesn’t like looking at me as much as it used to. The feeling is mutual anyway. I like it much better on the other side. Hahaha!

I hate taking self-portraits (the model I use just does not take direction well). But, this one was a fun experiment using a single remote speedlight with a highly reflective background plus one reflector card (ok, it was just a sheet of high-gloss 13×19 paper).
