JeffreyInDC commented on the post, Why Aperture Priority is the Most Preferred Shooting Mode by Photographers 10y ago
Nice article. I want to expand on one other way of “sharing” control with your camera. In the article you note that all four modes require you to set ISO manually. While technically true, many cameras offer a […]

Shot Sunday 3/30 at the end of my vacation devoid of any of the dramatic sunsets it is known for (I tried every evening), I did manage to get these beach silhouette scenes:

I hate taking self-portraits (the model I use just does not take direction well). But, this one was a fun experiment using a single remote speedlight with a highly reflective background plus one reflector card (ok, it was just a sheet of high-gloss 13×19 paper).

Rob–speaking of gear, is there a place on Lightstalking or elsewhere to pick peoples brains for gear recommendations? I know that I am overwhelmed by mountains of specs that may or may not be meaningful in real […]

This is a great image… absolutely love the light on the mountains. Here are two very, very picky thoughts: (1) there are a couple of dark areas at the very bottom that are a tiny bit distracting–might want to crop or dodge them, and (2) the sky appears very black (although a little hard to tell in this small image), which could be very…[Read more]

Ok… a couple of more attempts. First is just a crop of the original the second is a different shot (35mm, 1/2″, f/20). I like the depth of the first and and the better reflections, but the second give much better detail of the bridge, steeple and even boathouses beyond it). Would appreciate your thoughts.

I amped up the exposure the equivalent of a couple of stops in Lightroom, but had to add a graduated filter to preserve the details in the sky. The photo (as of 2/22) now shows these adjustments (I forgot that the link to Flick’r would not show both old and new).
I am playing with crops now, but think I will probably use a different image from…[Read more]

Now Rest GentlyI do not do much landscape photography, so all critique is welcome. Shot just after sunrise on a moderately overcast morning, ISO 200, 18mm, 1/5″, f/18.

(note–I know close to nothing about macro photography, so please take this with many grains of salt)
I think you are right about the hint of color–in this case it adds to, rather than detracts from the details of the individual fibers, how they wind around the stick, and the reflection (all, very very nice). One thought regarding comp–you…[Read more]

I agree with the comments about focal point. But, given that the image has personal significance, you can probably even out the sun/shade problem quite a bit in Lightroom or Photoshop by applying a graduated filter, rotated to an angle from top-left to bottom right. Adjust the exposure, contract, highlights and shadows to even out your lighting.…[Read more]

Can HDR be used field depth/sharpness as well as range? Example: I have a particular scene that I want that has a near-field and a mid-field object that I would like to keep in sharp focus. But it also has some […]

Really some nice suggestions, and the good news is that this is only a few blocks from my home (so I can shoot again). I was going for lining up the fence with both the near and far passage ways, but think that moving a couple of feet to my right and changing the angle (to eliminate the apartments from the frame) might work well. And I really like…[Read more]

Have at ItI just started experimenting with an ultra-wide angle lens, in part to break out of my mold of usually shooting close in and tight. To my surprise, it is also allowing me to get up close in new ways as well (I could never shoot this image before because I could not get in front of undesired obstacles and still see the entire passage…[Read more]

I am looking to buy my first neutral density filters. Any thoughts on shelling out for a single variable density filter, or go with 2 or 3 fixed density filters? Also, any recommendations would be appreciated–I always trust B+W filters, but they are pretty pricey. Thanks!Check It Out
