I spent some time at the Toronto Zoo recently, and got this shot of a gorilla through the glass. His name is Charlie.

I’ve been searching everywhere for affordable online backup. Some won’t back up RAW files, so not very helpful. Others take FOREVER to back up existing files so it would never be able to catch up. (I take a lot of photos with my 365 project.) I use two separate external hard drives, both Western Digital. The software sucks, but if you use it like a giant USB drive, it works okay.

I usually keep my Nikkor 70-300 mm on so I can grab a shot through the kitchen window of any birds that come to the feeder. When I go walking, I have that one on my D7000 and the 18-55 mm kit lens on my D60. Because it’s guaranteed that if I change off the long zoom for the wide angle for a landscape shot, that’s when a once-in-a-lifetime bird will fly by.

My back yard is a largish grassy space surrounded by trees, so we get quite a selection of birds. It helps that I feed them every morning!
This shot of the blue jay was actually taken from my kitchen window.

It is really tough to break into photography with a successful marketing strategy. I’ve tried it all – pay-for-print (Imagekind, Redbubble, etc), products (like Zazzle, Cafe Press, etc.), my own website, and more. I finally changed my focus from developing my photography as a business, to just developing my photography. I have come back to just doing it as a hobby, and I strive to improve my photography every time I go out, and I’m enjoying it much more. If I get some sales on the way, awesome! But I’ll keep my day job.

For those of you who wish to make money at it, I commend you! It’s a big step! But be prepared to invest a big pile of time and money into it.

I don’t want to be discouraging, and certainly my type of photography is probably the hardest to be “successful” at. Portrait and wedding photographers seem to do great. A lot of pressure, though. I’m just saying – go into it with open eyes.

Most of my shooting is when I just go for a walk in a park or nature setting. I do need to react fast if I’m going to get any shots of the birds and wildlife. I keep my Nikkor 70-300mm lens mounted, fully extended, with ISO at 100, f/5.6, and adjust shutter speed according the the VERY changeable light conditions. I hope for at least 1/400, can go down to 1/200 and still hand-hold but much lower than that I need to boost the ISO.

@admin I took this with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300 mm f4-5/6 on my D60. I don’t know if that fits the definition of a fast super-telephoto, but I am always wishing for a longer lens for those nature shots I can’t quite make!

I spent Sunday on the Niagara River “hunting” for ducks. I got some interesting shots. The weather was too cloudy for really great pictures, but I did add a new species to my birdwatching Life LIst. Here’s a pair of Hooded Mergansers.
