This is disappointing and amazing at the same time. It is critique like the above that forced me to throw in my cards two years ago. Sadly I have no time for such wasted time so I am leaving once again. I flat out refuse to take shower room images to please non wrestling fans. See ‘ya bye.
I failed to mention two important facts. I absolutely use Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom to my maximum advantage in Post Management. The second important fact is I always shoot the coaches in action and their family in the stands or at the food centers. Their’s get Post Managed and printed out first. The coaches or their designated person gets a high resolution DVD to use for any school purpose. These are the simple reasons why I am appreciated at the high schools and four area colleges with floor or game passes to all sports. Incidentally this for me is strictly a hobby. I rarely sell an image in the school circles.
Tobipsg……….There are two positions excellent for capturing wrestling action. 1. On your belly. 2. Butt on mat. One can not get up and move about. To a wrestling fan this is an exciting move in process. Two of a possible four back points have been awarded. It is nice when you occasionally get more face but that rarely happens and the photographer has few position or angle options. In high school meets I get away with entering on my mobility scooter and sometimes shoot sitting in the scooter about eight inches above the ideal on the mat positions. Being on the mat is still best. With help I go on belly or sitting on the edge of mat. The action comes to the photographer as is without any concern for the photographer’s desire what so ever. I shoot with a 7D + 70 X 200 F/2.8L IS zoom with monopod when on mobility scooter or standing. My settings are f 2.8 500th sec. or more, ISO what ever the specific gym forces me to use. HERSHEY gym is state of the art lighting provided. This image was selected from a continuous exposure shooting at approximately seven shots a second or some fifteen images or more. Thank you for the criticism. Your observation is correct. The option to jump around is non existing. The movement is but a flash anyway. Maybe one or two times a day that perfect position appears…just when the photographer is working his sore butt cheeks.
Really like this capture. I would try to go from blue to a more similar color as seen in the left twenty percent of the horizon line. It appears that the sun is falling behind the horizon which would render those mountains darker. That same blue got lighter as seen through the bus therefore pulling horizon line towards the bus. You determine your acceptance or likes. My comments are valid but you sure do not have to agree with them at all. Nice work.
I agree with the last two comments plus I would still like to open the lens up and reduce the depth of field done over several image re-dos to find the best image. Don’t give up on this capture it is a very good one with lots of potential yet to be found.
I like your capture. I think it could be improved by increasing the foreground and decreasing the less significant background. I would try to remove the light log which is grabbing my eye and taking it away from your excellent image. You nailed all of the important details on your critter. It is also punching out the top right corner which to my liking is not good. I would take the dark from the left top and have it cover the bright log. That bright log is not detailed at all in your reflection.
MY ANGLE WAS BELLY ON THE FLOOR.
I am sorry for a double post. The site seemingly will not let me edit the second image off the forum. I’m 78 years young. That’s my excuse and I shall have to stick to it.
Nikon-Nut See Shark Tank Forum: PENNSYLVANIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Got there. The site loved me so much I somehow was awarded two posts. Joking of course. However the mystery is how to delete one of the two posts. That’s not all but I would be pleased if you had a magic wand and could delete one.
Johntorcasio, It is absolutely evident you know the game. Your pre-planned capture and/or post management is pleasing. It appears to be live sports action because both players are reading the play well. The ball carrying lad is hiding well and patiently waiting for his block. The background is nicely muted in keeping with the finest professional shooting. Note that we should appreciate the time devoted to framing your submission. Peekaboo is a good title.
Thank you Nikon-Nut, Moderator. I know how most sites let me go to MY PICTURES and open my choice of image. I do not understand going to Flicker and linking them here. I have lots of images on Facebook.
When I get one almost outstanding it drives me nuts. I feel you have a good capture that might be even better cropping to move the image slightly to the right and possibly remove a little of the water.
December 25, 2013 at 6:48 pm in reply to: Shark Tank Etiquette (Please read this first) (UPDATED May 23, 2019) #116444Welcome. You will find reasonable effort is being made to make this open and growing set of guidelines work in the common interest.
Interesting! I think the tower is just beyond the mass of dark foreground and not at the end of the pier. I would suggest cropping to make your image delightful to your eyes. This will most likely include PM to remove the parts of the remaining tower and rebuilding the end of the pier. All of the water and structure mass is there to be used for this improvement… even if you need water where some of the foreground is now. I would like to see your work if you agree with my suggestion.
Looking only at the image I would like to see the image severely cropped to remove the wasted space and better present the subject. I believe to go any further I would have to enter philosophy not the purpose here.
Sorry I was confined to the bleachers thirty feet above the gym floor. I got no images as expected. The floor area was grossly over populated with wrestlers, coaches and administrative people. I have no press credentials.
I acknowledge and state my appreciation for all the comments for each has some value. My only surprise is that there was no Sports Action Photographer having any input either amateur or working professional. I was not at all sure what to expect as this was my first critique of this nature.
While this critique was active we all had the opportunity to see the world’s finest Sports Action Photographers shooting the baseball world series with their finest equipment right there behind the infield base lines as close to live action as is permitted in such events. The only set up time they had was before the first pitch, to go to the restroom, to clean their lenses and double check their technical equipment set ups. Even after paying really big bucks for a seat they get no opportunity to set up or choose anything. They likely got to pay union rates to have their equipment carried from the parking lot to security clearance and on to the assigned location where union electricians would be paid if any electrical service was required. This is fairly typical for national events. House security was observed in the photography areas.
My grandson’s college wrestling season begins this Saturday in a multi college tournament. If I am lucky I will be granted permission to cover the tournament. If so I will shoot between five hundred and a thousand images hoping to capture a dozen or so very good images from whatever vantage point is provided. Should I get a really good one I will return here hoping to know the Shark Tank personalities even better.
If I get a denial I will end up being seated in the bleachers just like any other fan. Good images do not come from the bleachers.“….there are ways to overcome “. Amen. I see a ton of interesting parts each of which could be a story into it’s self. Based on what I can see the structure would be most difficult to capture standing alone, in my opinion. Is there a curio shop where other’s photographic work might be studied? Could the natives and or tourists become an interesting part of the total story? I might consider the parts becoming support to the total image. I love a challenge and sometimes submit to torture while ending up with nothing yet I believe the difficult trips were worth their weight in gold. At least “sometimes” I learn where not to go in the future.
@jonathantimar……………thank you. We had three seconds three times. I was shooting continuous RAW which cuts the nine frames a second down somewhat. The lady did this three times. As said above it was a back flip . I chose the image which was the finished or flat out and falling image full open. The previous close images are coming out of a tuck and opening at the highest elevation. The following shots lost little but distance showing maximum height. In the three events the 7D gave me 70 images. About nine of them were at or near the open and decent position. I chose this one because I had all or parts of all four faces with wonderfully clear and unobstructed background for our tumbler. You are absolutely correct concerning potential for sales being small. I do not sell images so we don’t shoot for the buck although lots of good businesses succeed shooting kids of all ages in action.
Stepping back a little…………….good point. One camera photographer found me with 17 X 55 f2.8 IS lens on 7Dbody working close to capture the image….working a bit to fast to make the capture needing minimal crop. I could not get the desired composition with my 70 X 200 f2.8 IS because of sideline equipment, the boundary chains, the bleachers and press box all were right behind me. There was no time to make a switch for this capture. The other factor was that I was likely shooting at f3.5 or a bit higher working to get that DOF thinking sharp as a goal. Thank you for your intent to help me with your opinion. This action was performed three times giving all about nine seconds to work. I ended up with about seventy images to choose and PM this one.
Our college wrestling begins Saturday and continues into early Spring. There will be lots of low light indoor sports action opportunity for me to practice on. Our gym is fifty years old. Lots of fun shooting in old gyms.
