      I’m a newcomer to this site myself. I’ve found many interesting articles about photography in its pages, as well as received comments and suggestions to my own images in its forums. Nice site to learn and share about photography. So:

      a) Welcome;
      b) Whether it was 40 years ago or not, the basics and most important remains the same – f-stop, shutter speed, composition, light and colour – the rest, with time, you´ll see it’s peanuts;
      c) Happy shooting!

        Again; thank you all for your comments. I shoud add that second image was more a ‘proof-of-concept’ for a composition that would leave simmetry out. The single human element is much more interesting than the random bunch, I totally agree.

        Given your impressions in this thread, and the POV I started with, I’ll be trying to recapture the idea, with a longer focal distance, to reduce the negative space, as well as take advantage of the perspective compression and the resulting visibility of the light/shadow banding. 55 should do it ( Nikon DX-wise ).

        …And, of course, I’ll have to wait for _that_ moment when only one person is on the tunnel end. This will surely be the most difficult part… 🙂

          I’d say it retains much of what was originally imagined. Lines and light & shadow are still present, helping direct the viewer to the illuminated area and geometry, although less evident, can be deduced. I admit I enjoy both, though.

          Thank you, for your comments and suggestions.

            Taking simmetry out…

              Once again, thank you for your comments. Just a quick note: this is not an edited version of the first photo; it´s a different image, taken from the same spot and same POV. The tram in the second one is in ‘better shape’ with recent painting, which accounts for the more vibrant red. 🙂

              I intend to repeat this shot, in the Autumn, when there are a lot of fallen leaves on the track. I have one already, shot last October, but without tripod and remote shutter release. Much more noise, but made a nice 60 x 90 cm poster… 🙂

                While one can argue that whatever physical element is at the right side of the frame, supports the wood instead of leaving it hanging, I think it doesn’t contribute anything valid to the image. Cropping it all out, including the dark area, would make the horizontal and diagonal lines dominate the frame, which if I understood correctly, was what caught your eye in the first place.
                I’m not a fan of the blueish duotone, and am curious as to what the original colours where. I don’t know whether it was possible to use some form of fill light in post-production, but the worker could have used some, as he’s standing in a shade area.
                But that is, of course, my view and its subjectiveness…

                  Thank you everyone, for your comments and sugestions. As I refered, I took several shots on this spot; I hope I’m not being rude for posting a second image in the same thread, but since it goes towards some of the sugestions presented…

                  @John Thompson: Indeed. This is thr tram that connects Sintra to Praia das Maçãs. It is sought mostly by tourists, but locals use it too, to get a feeling of the ‘old times’ – myself included.

                    Hello;

                    Funny to say it, but the kind of images that I usually enjoy watching more, are photojournalism, which I’ve never done. Tell the story, grab that unique moment, ‘be there’…
