I also love the soft tones in this photo. However trying to give constructive negative feedback I’d also agree that the placing of the subject could be better.
I think the colours in the foreground are too light and too bright. I’d have been tempted to get closer to the water, and take the photo flatter across the shore. I wonder if increasing the contrast of the sky would add three dimensional impact?

I’d also add that the lack of colour range between the branch and the buds detracts from the impact of the foreground. The composition might have been improved by taking from a slightly different angle.

This only works for flickr, or for other links as well?
I’m confused as to why the top picture is so much bluer. Is this post production or a camera effect?

I rather suspect that the beauty of this photo comes from the fact that you can see the other side of the lake at all! It must have been a beautiful day!
I actually like the contrasting areas of light and shadow that the pumping station has and I wonder if it might have been better to get closer to it, lose the grass in the foreground and see what happens if you make the shapes, shadows and relections of the construction fill the frame more.
I have a similar shot in my collection but there’s more going on in the foreground to tell a story.

Yeah there at lots of interesting places here but I’ve found you have to work quite hard to get good pictures. The light is frequently super bright and harsh, the air is hazy (or worse) and there’s lots of unwanted extras in the shots like electricity cables, trash, satellite dishes etc.
You are right though, people are generally happy to have their photo taken and photography is a super popular hobby here. Also Indonesia seems to feature in photo competitions and the pages of National Geographic pretty often, so there must be ways round the challenges!
I guess I can go hunting for more like this đŸ˜‰
Learning all the time!
Thanks
I’m near Jakarta. On holidays I try to explore more widely though. It’s a big country and it takes a lot of time to get around. Any recommendations from you for places to go?
Thanks for the analysis and comments. It’s already been substantially darkened on the hand area. If you look closely, you can see the dark shadows caused by a radial filter. I can’t go any further with introducing an obvious black stripe!
I’ll be in Bali in September as well strangely enough! There’s lots of photo opportunities there but it’s easy to fall into the cliche traps as well…
Yup it’s not easy to control the light in the jungle. It’s either very bright or very dark depending where the light comes through the trees. I’ve already been over her hand with a radial filter in lightroom and dialed the exposure down but it’s getting noisy at that ISO. I’ve had a go at reducing the greens saturation and you’re right, it does look better. Thanks!

You could try raising the contrast slightly to add extra definition to this guys face. What would that do?
I’d be curious to know why you went for b&w instead of colour?
It’s an unusual angle and it pulls the eye in lots of different directions which for me, ends up on the rags below the stays. It kind of feels like it should evoke sky and wind, but because of those rags, it stops that.

I’m kind of new to this forum and also to critiquing photos, so what I say is just my opinion.
I think this photo is reasonable. I think the horizon is sloping. It seems higher on the right hand side, but this could be the effect of the lens. I think I would have chosen a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field, and put the camera on something to improve the detail. It looks like this is a fairly low res picture so it’s hard to look closely at the detail.
