Been wanting to post this one for a while and finally got around to it….
Landmarks – Monuments… Recognized either Internationally, Nationally or Locally. I’ve posted three examples; one of each.
International:
National:
The Big Nickel is a nine-metre (30 ft) replica of a 1951 Canadian nickel, located at the grounds of the Dynamic Earth science museum in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and is the world’s only numismatic coin park.
Local:
The Esplanade Riel, named in honour of Louis Riel, is a side-spar cable-stayed bridge which spans the Red River connecting downtown Winnipeg with St. Boniface. It is a pedestrian bridge and is the only bridge with a restaurant (Mon Ami Louis) in North America.

That is a magnificent shot of the Leaning tower of Pisa. I’m always Sooooooo impressed when a photographer captures an often photographed landmark in an expressly fresh and interesting way. Wonderful!

Thanks David. For most of that day, the monument was not visible at all. We returned several times to try and get a glimpse of it. On our last attempt, the clouds opened up just a bit for about 5 minutes, long enough to get this shot- which is one of my personal faves in my portfolio, and then the monument was gone for the rest of the day. So, yes… right place at the right time!

Great shot @kent ! One of the few positives of rain… few tourists.

That is very true! And boy did it rain that day. In fact, when we came down from the little mountain where the observation area is. We got a flash flood warning on our cell phones. And at the little town at the base of the mountain- what was a stream that ran right through the town when we saw it earlier in the day- was now a raging river that was spilling over its banks and onto the roads. We barely got out of there.

Nice shot Kent. I’m curious….is it two shots combined or some pp magic?

Shhhhhhhhh… it is two shots combined. Crowd with the umbrella earlier in the day. Monument… no one was there because the weather was so awful

I don’t know how I missed this earlier. But, I think that shot of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is pretty amazing!

Allows Edits? YesLike what other members have mentioned, the leaning tower is a totally different perspective from what I’ve seen so far in other images Paul. Looks like the lean is more prominent here than the others 🙂

Thank you Dahlia. I was also surprised by how much it leans. I think it’s the vertical lines of other buildings that provides the perspective. We were the first tour group there (even surprised the people selling the souvenirs). I think there were only two people I had to clone out and they were by the baptistery (middle building). It was probably 20 minutes before other groups started to arrive impossible to get a clear shot of it (even up close).

Allows Edits? YesYeah, usually a very crowded image is what we get to see most of the time. Definitely as you have mentioned, the verticals help to tell how much the tower is leaning. Thanks Paul 🙂

Allows Edits? YesI’m on leave now so finally got to play a bit with my DSLR and put into use some of the things I have been learning. This is a shot of the founder of the great city of Adelaide, South Australia, Colonel William Light. He is pointing to the site he selected back around 1836.
Pentax K5, Sigma 35mm lens, 1/125th sec, f/11, ISO 160, Av, spot metering.
Tweaked in Photopad and a bit in Photoshop (still trying to figure it out).

Allows Edits? YesI like the light in this image Graham; the way it illuminates the clouds in the background and the statue 🙂

Allows Edits? YesThanks Dahlia. Yes it is a very bright sunny day with the sun almost directly overhead. This irked me a bit because the underside of the statue is quite dark, especially his arm. I decided to go B&W to make it a feature rather than a bugbear. I thought the light on his back matched the cloud behind him also. I thought about placing him on the left of the image but he would have been pointing to bright blue clear skies. This way, you’re left wondering what he’s pointing at which adds interest.

The B&W conversion works really well for this image Graham. And, like you, I like that he’s closer to the RH side making the viewer wonder what he is looking/pointing at.

Allows Edits? YesThanks bucweeet. Its great to get confirmation of one’s ideas as I wasn’t sure about the positioning of him. All the ‘rules’ say to have the subject’s eyes, arms or whatever pointing into the image not out of it but it didn’t work for me so I broke the rules yet again. (I’m getting good at it).

Definitely brings back memories for me Robert.
Almost expecting an accompanying photo of the Red Dog Saloon with Henry standing behind the bar.
