On layer modes.
The biggies, for me, are –
‘Multiply, to create darker tones using a duplicated layer, which is the opposite of the
‘Screen’ method @michael-lloyd described;

@billiemae77 I sharpen some in LR but PS is way better. I use the Unsharp Mask feature. You keep on repeating the cycle until you see it’s going to far then you select ‘Edit/Step Backward’.
I’m shooting with a d600 too. It’s OK but not fantastic with high ISO’s. Put it this way: if you don’t have to crop then you can really push the ISO’s. If…[Read more]

@billiemae77, It is a lovely picture and I really enjoy the mood and setting, but I don’t quite understand the tonal assessment part as per your Flickr post? As you used PS, I assume it’s a post processing exercise? I this was meant to creat ‘warm’ and ‘cold’ areas, I would concur with gypsegrl and expect a warm halo of light going from the candle…[Read more]

@keithinmelbourne I like the suggestion regarding the “risk of falling”. I have another image of this climber where this is conveyed better.
@billiemae77 thanks for your comment regarding the crop. I agree, I should have shot this particular shot with more of the lower body in place and then adjusted my crops afterwards.
