I was just making sure about the first query 😉
Thanks for all the info and your time @michael-lloyd. I will surely see how this exercise helps me in future!!
Regards.
@michael-lloyd i should be following light stalking more than what i do currently to take advantage of such a pool of information 🙂 One more addition to the “To Do List” 😉
I will definitely experiment with the LR5 default setting. I just have one question before i begin. When you say “start off in LR” you meant start the post processing stage where the camera finished its job? Meaning, does having default settings on LR change the embedded RAW file settings when opened? Since i started LR i haven’t made any changes in its settings.
The defaults that you mentioned above, does that mean all imported images will automatically change to those settings?BTW thanks for all the information!
Thanks @jonathantimar. I did feel the first image looked a little flat maybe because i lowered the contrast more than necessary?
So you mean instead of f-4.5 i should lower down to 2.5 or something? The photo was taken in a casual setting so did not care much about the choice, but i feel i should be more careful about these issues for better photography skills.
I am learning still so this exercise is very helpful!Your version is definitely better 🙂 thanks for the efforts!!
I am loving Lightroom too! Thanks for all the inputs @el-dub, i really appreciate your help 🙂
@el-dub i tried some editing as you suggested. I guess i am just excited to learn the new tools.
I am sure you would have more suggestions to give. Thanks @el-dub for your useful inputs. I am going to learn to use those tools on lightroom now 😉
Would love to see if your version of edits on the first image, if you have the drive and time for it 😉Lightroom for brightness, contrast, color and clarity. A little bit of photoshop for sharpening etc.
@el-dub
All are with window light on an overcast day
f-4.5
iso- 8003rd image i bumped up the brightness factor to make it look like a pool of light in the background
I am in between ‘like the picture’ and ‘perfect picture’
For me a good picture is what captivates the viewers and then comes technicalities.
– The composition is good. Just to be more critical i would have included a little more part of the tree on the top right corner. I am not very bothered by what i see right now though.
– The image showcases the Joshua tree’s structural quality. The spiky feature of the tip of the tree is pretty.
– The texture of rocks and Tree trunk is kind of similar in appearance.
– I would have liked the tree to stand out a little bit maybe with brightness stand point so that it becomes a focal point in the portrait.IMO most images that have a focal point captures people’s attention and curiosity too. In this photo the way the photograph is post processed or given high contrast with no grey range as mentioned by @nikon-nut makes this image less pleasing or of no interest even when there are some interesting elements like mountains, sky and the house in the valley. If you have to re-do this image in your post prod, you might want to add the grey’s back and highlighting either the beautiful mountains in the back and or the house in the valley along with sky. In short, you need to give hierarchy to the elements in this image to make it work.
I agree, the image is over processed. It needs to tone down first in red/orange tint and later if required the contrast ratio
I liked the second image since it showed the baby face more. However i felt the 1st image gave that feeling of the laid back mood to me…
As per masurt’s & admin’s comment i modified the image. I cropped the image to the mother’s feet and roughly (not very neat) filled the window on the top left corner which was like a distraction. it might have been interesting to see the result if i had a shot that covered the window further up. I guess this is the drawback of taking the photo keeping in mind the minimum crop while post editing.
When i took that photo, i took the chair and the mother/son as one subject rather than the mother/son as the subject.

Thanks @admin for your review 🙂
I joined Light stalking today and i see the benefit of Shark tank! I always wanted to have constructive criticism and i feel this is a good place to begin with.I agree with you on the top left window being a little distracting.
I liked the composition.
Did you reduce the clarity and made it more blurr while Post Prod? I would have loved to see the wooden fence a little sharper? (i am not sure what technical word is used for the fence in water)I would agree with PMarione. IMO the branches on the left of the frame balances the bark on the right side. The branches lingering over the window is something i would have liked to see going away 😉
The eeriness of the milky window with torn curtains in contrast with the rusting shingles compliments the concept of the ghost town.I agree with Cyrel.
It lacks lighting. In the past i have tried taking flies outdoors, but since i do not have an external flash, either i over expose the fly or under expose 🙁I am a No pro but IMO this photo would have been perfect if you were able to capture a little more of a context to tell a broader story. As you said, i too wished you had a different lens that gave you the freedom to zoom out a little. Also, if the eyes had little more brightness, it might have helped raising the interest?? I feel it this way maybe because i prefer a little more brightness in my photos.
Overall i liked the photo. -
