One of Lightstalking’s standout still life photographers @valeryp shares a little bit about their photographic journey in the following introduction. My apologies to those who have returned my email requests – you are in a queue, and I will be posting about one a fortnight, so stay tuned…
I’m originally from Russia and now living in Israel.
As long as I remember myself I was photographing-without knowing exactly what I was doing. And then at the beginning of 90’s I have picked up the “Basic Book Of Photography” by Tom and Michele Grimm. BTW although the book was written in film era – I highly recommend it to every one who wants enter in photography and understand what’s it’s all about. This book hooked me on photography.
My digital experience is just about 3 years-I’m using Nikon 7000 with mainly prime lenses: 35,50 and 90 macro.
As many of us I’ve started with landscapes but very quickly had understood that I cannot get a decent result from first visit on the site-it should be prepared by exploring the site in order to find the best POV and then come again in right time to take a photograph. Being busy at work I found this schedule almost impossible for me.
So I started to look around and find a lot of forms, lines, textures and colours just under my hands. Having a little skill in drawing I decided to implement them in still life area – and I’m still there…
My biggest challenge in photography is to get exactly the image I’d envisioned. I’m not there yet…
My favorite expression about photography belongs to Henry Cartier-Bresson: Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst!
If I could choose the camera to use for one year it would be a view camera.
Photographer who inspires me? Harold Ross with his light paining images-I have to try that one day!
Who should we interview next?-Crissie Bee-very talented person!

I could hardly contain my excitement to open this introduction up, but, no surprise, every time you post a new still life it is like a little gift. The details of a photographer’s life experience perhaps does not matter, but for me it provides a layer of texture on every one of their photographs. Thank you for sharing. How long have you lived in Israel?

Allows Edits? YesHi Valery, I, too, was delighted to see you were the one we would get to know better. When I joined Lightstalking in January and saw your work, I was so impressed I shared your photos with my friends. Your unique style and the impressive lighting used to showcase your simple subjects transform them into beautiful art. Keep creating and sharing with us.

An interesting read indeed! I would never have guessed that you’re from Israel! I’m not the still-life ‘type’ but I don’t have to be to realise that your shots are exquisite (BTW the 3rd one shows up as ‘not found’)! I can imagine those shots also need a string of re-takes before you’re satisfied, just like landscapes! 🙂
Nice to have you around on the forum, keep on producing the goods!

Hi Valery! I have enjoyed watching your work develop over the last couple of years, so this was an interesting read. You have certainly developed your ‘brand’ with still life work and generated some exquisite images. I’m particularly glad you included the pomegranate, one of my favourites!

Valery you Rock Lass…..I love your attention to detail……would describe a lot of your work as planned classical….im jealous !! 🙂
Always remember posting on someones image in the ST stating that my critique was worthless and that they should wait and act on your advice….your response was ‘Im not worthy’…….well you are! 🙂

Good to learn a bit about you Valery. It’s also nice to see some larger versions of your images…would be nice if you linked your future posts to Google drive too. Like Gordon the pomegranate is one of my favorites. Your still life’s are an inspiration as is your ability to communicate in more than one language Valery…..much respect.

Hi Valery it was very nice to read about you. You know when I did my write up and it was asked which are your favorite photos it was not until I submitted my writing that I thought: Perhaps they meant other photographers! I think the list would be too long for all of them. Please continue to contribute. I may not comment on your postings in the ST as much as I used to but that is because I find that more and more there is nothing to improve. I have enjoyed watching your postings over the months.

Hi Valery, Thanks for letting us in.
I am not a still-life person but I very much appreciate your skills, eye for detail and lighting. Your still-lifes lives! That is a great accomplishment.

Hi Valery… I am, as always, late to the party.
But that won’t keep me from complimenting you on your excellent work and telling you just how much I enjoy every post.
Thanks for sharing.
