Thank you. I’ve actually always like shadows.

thanks @dahliaambrose. Full color won’t be here until early to mid-November. I love re-visiting places to try to find new ways of seeing familiar settings.

Thanks @davidc and @patrickw-2. I was fortunate to select a good spot. This is one of our grandsons, 14 years old running in the Junior Varsity portion of the meet. He finished 2nd, setting a PR and matching his stated goal. Need to get that horizon and light pole upright. This is a significant crop. I should have framed it differently, using only…[Read more]

The title says “mushrooms…” though, as Rob says, the color of shroom does look look more lemony. Still, a strong shot.

Framing the haze. Late summer in South Carolina, greens moving towards yellow.

LightandShadow replied to the topic Caught in the Flow in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 2wk, 3d ago
I think your mix of flow and still is very good. I like the dominant diagonal line and the mix of bright vibrant colors and dark. I might try to brighten the blue water against the black background. Not by much but enough to make it a bit more of a feature but still preserve that it is in deep shadow.
Not sure about genre. I would probably put…[Read more]

LightandShadow replied to the topic Marsh at Charles Towne Landing in the forum Landscape Photography 2wk, 3d ago
Marsh land does suggest peacefulness, though nearly everywhere, there’s development that intrudes on the margins. People build right up to the edges, undermining the peace that attracted them there.

Thanks, Rob. I was once told my a “chest thumper” on a critiquing forum that I’d be laughed out of the place for the blowout on the Egret. Maybe not perfect in preserving some textures but I always liked it.
Marshes always hold interest for me. Plenty of color and texture in various lighting conditions. Foreground interest and lines are always…[Read more]

Maybe this can also remind us that people we encounter who seem ordinary or even boring could have talents that lie outside our perception so treat them with at least respect—unless they show themselves to be dominated by something much darker.

Nice. I especially like that first image. A ton or so of animal levitating—great timing.

LightandShadow replied to the topic Rock Pool in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 3wk, 3d ago
I like the subject and, in general, the image. For me, it also demonstrates the limitations of phone photography. The rocks below the surface and the reflections off the water: you would likely have snapped on your circular polarizer to deal with them. Adjust the exposure to deal? Can be done but is never as easy to do. The slider just doesn’t…[Read more]

Art museums are interesting places to photograph. I always feel a bit sheepish, taking pictures of paintings but it is also possible to treat the outing as a challenge to doing something other than walking away with memories–or expensive coffee table books–“not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

I have always overestimated my ability to handhold my camera and get sharp focus. Recently, I’ve experimented with a way that, for me, redeems an image that I would normally reject. Here’s an example. On a walk yesterday along the Saluda River, I saw this bird perched on the branch across the small creek. It was a good distance away. Even with my…[Read more]

LightandShadow replied to the topic Are the days of macro lenses over ? in the forum General Photo Chit Chat 3wk, 5d ago
Don’t know if the day of this type of lens is over but these images are very very good. Of course, one issue with macro lenses or extension tubes is that you have to get up close and personal for them to work. That can always scare the critter off so longer focal lengths with some judicious cropping can yield excellent results. Might not work as…[Read more]

LightandShadow replied to the topic Sunshine & False Sunflower in the forum The Shark Tank Feedback Forum 4wk, 1d ago
This is a tiny scene in what’s probably a large garden or even a wildflower. Nothing “false” about it (and not a sunflower). Sun-flower might be a better term. It’s the sort of image many would fail to notice–how the single bloom is isolated by the light. I have a friend who comments that it reflects “a photographer’s eye” to see and render these…[Read more]
