Great feedback @lightandshadow, thank you. I’m not able to physically haul a tripod when I’m shooting in nature, my back will simply not have it lol. I have a set of extension tubes but haven’t used them in a while. They didn’t seem to work and play well with my camera so they ended up not being worth the bother. Is there a way I can learn to test…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your suggestion of revisiting the film WALL-E, @lightandshadow. And I love your wordsmithing with the beautiful phrase “a route to redemption.” That’s definitely a keeper in my book and good words to live and create art by. 🙂 You remind me of a favorite quotation: “If you want to awaken all humanity, then a…[Read more]

Patrick, I agree. I also know instantly if I like something or not. But even if I like something there are often things that can improve the image. And usually, these improvements make you like the image even better.
Like I said in my first line in the comment: This picture, “line of chairs” does not work for me and I try to explain…[Read more]

I think it’s a good summary @lightandshadow
People tend to use the ST for different things. Most of the regulars here have their camera craft at a pretty good level which leads to matters of taste. But many newer folks are looking for technical tips. All are welcome, but how useful you find the critiques probably depends largely where you are…[Read more]

Thank you for your kind comments and caution that new rules could reduce about my future winnings lol, @lightandshadow . Too funny, I’ll remember that! No money at this point, all I have to lose is ribbons. I pay close attention to the rules, and then I break them haha. I believe in technical proficiency, but my goal will always be creativity. I’m…[Read more]

I love this! And competition helps us give us the motivation to improve. Game on, spring is coming with new blooms every day in nature or in markets. 😀 A thought for @lightandshadow, try gently burning out your lousy backgrounds to black, then it won’t matter where you take the shot IMHO.

I couldn’t agree with you more @lightandshadow . That’s what I love photography, especially out in nature – every day and even every moment is new with season, weather & lighting changes. It’s a wonderful way to appreciate being alive in a beautiful world.

Thanks @lightandshadow for your description of the GBH. Now I’ll be sure to check out the tree tops at their highest branches no matter how thin. Great tip!
As for “found objects,” good point. I’ve experienced that too with missed garbage and also unwanted foliage ruining my shots. They don’t count as “serendipity” in my book but usually as…[Read more]

Hi everyone, I feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the insightful comments and suggestions, it is all very much appreciated.
@federicoalegria    Federico, your really nice comments about the colour palette (right image) and her expression are reassuring. Yes, I became aware later that the sun was in her eyes on the left. If the right oppo…[Read more]

@lightandshadow Thanks! I have to admit, I struggled a bit at this place. I love landscape, but there really was “nothing” in abundance. lol
