This month we get an insight into long term Lightstalker Duncan Stewart, aka The Falx.
Where do you live?
I farm just out from the city of Worcester…….middle England
Hobbies and interests?
Tabletop wargaming for more than 30 years, I have always been a keen reader of history especially military. I have several 28mm armies inc Sassanid, Rep Roman, Hittite etc. The club I joined years ago now meets for the last 20 years, at my place in a spare bedroom. We have a 4 by 8 table, the entrance fee being a bottle of wine, or cake if driving. We are now known as the Malvern Wino Wargames Society! Last Mon it was the Welsh versus 100 years war English
And Cricket. Test Cricket especially and Test Rugby. If I had to emigrate then the lucky country would have to be a top Cricketing nation………….so watch out Tobie! 🙂
And of course farming… ‘tis a way of life that encompasses everything with virtually no reward…
How long you have had an interest in photography?
Not that long. In my younger days looked on it as either take pics or be involved. I preferred to be involved… ie the doing not the taking!
Course had to steady down what with a wife and family and thought I had some sort of eye. I still think I’m better than I am! 🙂What got you interested in photography?
The Nikon d40x. I saw glowing reports and jumped in. I sold it soon after for the d300…..hooked!
What is the best advice you received so far regarding photography?
Insulation tape……never leave home without it!
How do you maintain inspiration?
I don’t… it comes and goes. I have learnt that I go in cycles… I have been at the point of selling everything but then reach a position of happiness. You’ve just gotta take the troughs… everything goes in a circle!
What is your favourite subject to shoot and why?
Nope. I have a lot of respect for photographers concentrating on one subject and making it their own. I have taken some bike and car racing shots, really enjoyed it, and pretty well nailed it. I came back with 600 images to work down to say 4 – there’s only so many that will keep the interest.
Do you have a favourite type of photography?
Gotta be Street – bang ‘em off and get home to see if you’ve hit the jackpot!
How would you describe your photographic journey to date?
All self taught…. magazines, books and others images… apart from one course I attended by the great image maker known as Bryn Griffiths called Continuing Photography where I learnt a bit, met some people still are friends and Bryn uses my farm or drags me off on a shoot.
Are you currently involved with any photography projects? If so, what?
Ah man….everywhere you read about projects and work that’s related…..hey not knocking the concept but it aint for me… I’ve tried…….Malvern Hills Wells, Teme River Debris etc.
If you could only use one camera/lens combination for a year, which would you choose?
Went to Berlin a couple of years ago leaving the 800 and big lenses at home……armed with the 300 and 1.4 50mm and took some great shots. For a year its gotta be the 800 and 24/70 2.8 ‘cus it covers most !
What is your favorite image right now?
Gotta be one of mine…..back myself but then get shot down in flames! 🙂
Is a photographer that inspires you?
Tom Dinning……..just love his work……he’s out there……..especially his dark street views, not always easy viewing but gets a reaction.
Caimi also puts in some thoughtful stuff, and Lennies mexico just gets more and more interesting! What is your biggest challenge when it comes to photography?
Easy answer is how to better the last image. It cant always be done… hard lesson learnt!
Try to produce an image that keeps someone’s attention for longer than a few secondsIs there anything specific you intend to learn or improve in your photography?
What I hate about photography is the maths and science. – yeah you have to learn some…..but its art and individualistic and that’s what counts more than theory. That said no photographer stops learning! 🙂

Great read Duncan. I like your individualism and perspective. Being raised in a farm community myself I got a kick out of your farming comment!

Hi Falx – well for great cricketing you could always come and join us in New Zealand. If you do then you must visit us in Birkenhead, Auckland.
Am very intrigued about the insulation tape and hope you share more in this post on its advantages and applications.
Much appreciate your succinct and pertinent comments. We may cringe in anticipation of receiving these, but they certainly add value and insight.
Take care, JimPS – this is a great series and certainly interesting.

Nice learning a more about you, @falx! One thing I’ve learned: there’s only one falx! 😉
Don’t listen to @mistyisle – for cricketing rather come to South Africa. We’re the #1 test team (http://www.espncricinfo.com/rankings/content/page/211271.html) and we’re above NZ in the ODI’s and T20’s! 😉 If rugby is your main concern – well, give NZ what is due them… The coming world cup is going to give us hourse of mega-pleasure, that’s certain!

2 plus 2 equals 22! 🙂
Insulation tape…….well for one….any Nikkor user owning the 18-200 3.5-5.6(its for sale!) taking a shot looking down will understand the need of……creeps gives me! 🙂
Then theres the reluctant subject, live or dead….remote flash etc………..
All my lense hoods are wrapped round with said product…..and if room use red and black to leave a thin red line…..yeah sad sad sad! 🙁 but they will take some stick as gear will if used properly/improperly!

Bless you bro, for no greater man has stood on a cow pad. You’re uglier than I thought you would be. I expected a hipster version of Neil Diamond for some reason.
You are without a doubt one of the most exciting and fascinating photographers in LS. It’s all to do with your approach. Just get out there and do it. The images will reflect who you are.
Xxx
Tom
