I don’t remember ever seeing a throwdown for bees. As a gardener, I love seeing lots of bee activity in my yard. Until I started photographing them I didn’t realize how many different kinds of bees there are! I will kick off with a couple of shots from this summer:
Raining Pollen (bee on the corn tassel)
In the Pumpkin Flower (I learned that the squash bee, seen here, is a specialized bee that mostly visits cucurbits – squash, pumpkins, gourds, etc.)

LeanneC – great shots, cool idea for throwdown, now if i wasn’t afraid of bees… 🙂 actually i end up getting all kinds of bees and wasps just because i catch them in the flowers i like.

Thanks Dorothy! Can’t wait to see some of your images. I always say that if you photograph flowers eventually you end up photographing bees (and other insects)!

Dreamy, softness of the flowers, thanks to a nice shallow DOF. But the bee is nice and sharp. Great image, Graham. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome photos David! Love the variety. Do you get many bumblebees where you are? We have seen some monster ones this summer – they sound like a small helicopter and fly a bit like a blimp. I have yet to capture one in a shot though! Usually I am dodging to get out of their way.
-
August 16, 2019 at 3:50 am #416956
We don’t get them at all in Brisbane Leanne. This was taken in Tasmania where there are heaps of them. We get teddy bear bees and blue banded bees. Have seen teddy bears but not managed to photograph one yet. Will try harder. Will find a blue banded bee pic and post also.

I’ll blame Robert for opening the door. 🙂
Not a bee but a fly. A carnivorous fly. At least I THINK it’s a fly. Kind of hard to see but this fly is eating another insect. I spent some time looking but could not find what type of fly this is.

Thanks. You asked about lens used on my Woodland Skipper shot. This shot an exception. Lens used here is Pentax D FA 100mm Macro WR on a K-1 II. This Coreopsis is real popular with the pollinators. With those colors it’s no wonder.

I recently made a trek up a mountain in Revelstoke, B.C. The temperature drop as we went higher was quite marked and when we explored a trail close the summit we were greeted by beautiful meadows and loads of ‘sleeping’ bumble bees. Every other flower had a bee at rest. I had to look it up and discovered that if the temperature drops the bees will simple nestle in to a flower, as it can be several degrees warmer than the air temperature. It was a little eerie seeing so many bees so still in one place.

This one has an almost “metallic” look Graham. Nicely captured! And yes, there sure are a lot of bees out there! I went to look up a bumble bee I photographed only to learn that our province alone has 32 different ones!

-
August 24, 2019 at 7:15 pm #417643
These bees are living it up on a Malva Zebrina. According to the tag that came with the plant it’s a perennial Mallow. I don’t know any more than that except that every pollinator in the garden loves it. If you like pollen it’s been THE place to be the last couple of weeks.

Focus is soft but this is the only decent bee shot I’ve managed to get with one flying facing me, Dave. They sure look awkward!
-
September 4, 2019 at 9:52 am #418668
It’s not an easy shot to get. As your shot here shows many times there’s a branch or flower petal or something in the way preventing a clear shot. They almost never give you a clue they’re about to take off. They rarely rise straight up when they take off. Combining narrow aperture for decent DOF and shutter speed needed to stop movement requires high ISO resulting in more noise. And on and on. All that said you captured a pretty good shot of a bee flying toward you. 🙂

Gorgeous shot, Dave! One of my favourite subjects on a favourite fall flower! I love the shadow of the wing on the flower petal. Don’t give up, Rob! You are the northern hemisphere’s hope to keep this thread going for us for the next several months 😉
Seriously, many of my shots are duds with insects. I sometimes shoot in burst mode and will get several shots and one will be alright. Another strategy is to watch which flowers that they hang around on longer. You will catch them yet!
