Hi folks , just sharing this photo to see what you think , i only had 2 mins talking to this guy and had the chance to get a couple of frames , Just wondering is it too tight , should i use a different light source ect , anything i should do , really just trying to see if i can get better at this kind of photo as its all new to me , Thank you 🙂

Hi Patrick,  I think you nailed it, the hard light is perfect for your subject.  ST. You might try making his Adam’s Apple just a tad darker and lighten the white in the eye on the left eye, again just a tad.

Hi Patrick, I think the lighting works great for this film noir kind of shot. The only thing that I feel can be improved is the expression. It looks like the subject is putting too much strain in their eyes to look that way but not sure if that was the situation and what you think about it 🙂

Thank you very much for that Dahlia , what you say is so important i agree , this was something i was very conscious of and the expression was actually very natural for him , In this moment he looked out the window and for a split second and seemed to be in his own thoughts a little space in his own head , like looking out but thinking about something else , hope that makes sense , moments before if i had of taken a frame it would have felt very forced as he kept looking at the camera , I did say just forget i am here and just do your own thing then i got the image i posted 🙂

Yup, I’m with Rob on this one, a bit of negative space in front of his face will enhance the storytelling nature of his stare. Great portrait my friend!

it feels uncomfortable to me.  i heard once that the nose shouldn’t cross the cheek.  i’m not sure if that’s really a thing.  but the head does seem to be twisted uncomfortably far.  the eyes looking away might make it seem more pronounced.  the light looks good.

First time i heard that advice about the nose shouldn’t cross the cheek , I think the tight crop does not work as i hoped , Thank you for your thoughts Beth 🙂

Sorry I’m late to the party Patrick. I like your image and agree with Rob that less space on the left and more on the right could be better.

You might consider under exposing these type of photos to capture more details in the brightest parts.. As it is, it’s slightly overexposed on HIS left side. With today’s noise reduction capabilities in post it’s not as important to expose to the right IMHO.

For me I’d like to see a bit more range by pulling the mids/darks back a bit to soften it a bit. This guy doesn’t look like a swarthy soul and a slightly less harsh image might suit him better. That’s all subjective though. And as Lenny has pointed out…I could be wrong LOL

You advice is always very welcome Rob , i still have the original image so will look at it more with all the help i got here from you all is sound and much appreciated , this tight crop was an afterthought i do have plenty of space in the original photo so i can fix that up 🙂
