@martye It wouldn’t take much to put up a small piece of black cardboard and doing so can save you hours of work in post processing.
Off the top of my head, I can see using something like a lightweight Manfrotto Nano light stand:

@martye Even based on strict journalistic standards, you haven’t breached any ethical standards — IF you used the burning tool or adjustment layers and masks to produce your dark backgrounds. Under journalistic standards, you’d be permitted to dodge, burn, make color corrections and adjustments to the tones in your images. Basically, anything t…[Read more]

@martye As I mentioned earlier, I’m happy to help.
Hardware selection is important, but AFAIK, all displays need to be calibrated. I currently use a high-end Dell monitor that was specifically designed for graphics and photography, and the color output before and after calibration was like night and day. I never make judgements about color,…[Read more]

@martye OK.
The reason I am asking if the prints you received from MPix is that many vendors automatically apply corrections to the images during the printing process the same way that one-hour photo places used to do.
For some customers, this will improve the way the prints look, while for others — like myself — who have already made the…[Read more]

@martye I apologize. I really haven’t used the built-in calibration tool in a long time since I have several X-rite products. Some monitors have limited controls so you might not be able to make some adjustments.
When you entered your pictures in contests did you make the prints or did you have them made by a service?
If you sent them out, did…[Read more]

@erik-fransman Fascinating experience with color, Erik. Thanks.
@martye Marty, this plant is very photogenic – I love it. My comment is that the green in the image is too saturated and has too much blue in it. (Of course, as Beth mentioned, it’s hard to know what each of us sees in our monitors.)

@martye This lens is a Canon EF mount lens so it will work on your Canon 90D and any Canon camera that has an EF mount.
I think you will be very happy with this lens, provided it is in the condition they say. You’ll want to thoroughly test it within the return period and contact them if you have any issues with it during the six month warranty…[Read more]

Not trying to over load you @martye as I said you will need an adapter for the EOS, the mechanical arm, Kenneth Mentioned, is built into them and they become fully manual lenses with adjustable F stop as originally designed. I’ve been doing this for years and have shot with everything from cctv mini lenses to Russian made spy lenses recovered from…[Read more]

@martye No problem.
You’re fortunate that Canon makes two different extension tubes for the EF system:

@martye With respect to Robert, I would not recommend using vintage lenses with Canon EF mount SLR cameras.
The reason is that Canon EF cameras (and all RF mount cameras) control their lenses electronically and have no way of coupling to the mechanical levers which are required to work with vintage lenses. If you had a Nikon dSLR, it would be a…[Read more] -

@martye That’s definitely a good way to start.
I find that autofocus is extremely jittery with my extension tubes, so I have to be very careful about where I point the AF sensors.
Apparently, AF is such a problem when shooting macro some people find that it’s best to manually focus.

@martye like Elin mentioned and There are a few on Ebay for not much
Cannon Macro lenses on Ebay
You just need to be careful that they say no fungus, no scratches, no haze, I have a few cannons in my collection and its my understanding the old cannon mounts are easily adapted to the new cannon mounts. -

@martye If you decide to buy used equipment, I suggest buying from a reputable dealer rather than a private party on eBay. Most of my equipment wasn’t new when I acquired it, and most came from reputable online dealers. I’ve found that going through dealers saves me a lot of time and headaches. Many of the dealers have eBay stores as well.

@martye No that I know of. It’s probably been over 20 years since I have used the built-in calibration tool — and I don’t know how good it is compared to the dedicated kits which X-Rite and DataColor sell. My understanding is that the best method of calibrating displays is to always use one of the dedicated hardware kits.
The built-in tool…[Read more]

@martye Thanks. I feel lucky to be with the USPO.
I didn’t realize we had so much in common.
I was born in the Bay Area — East of San Francisco — and grew up here, but I have also lived in San Fernando Valley, Palm Springs, Bakersfield and Encinitas. I went to journalism school at San Jose State, so I lived in San Jose for a few years as well.

Unfortunately, won’t be able to do any eclipse-related activities, as I am starting a new position with the Federal Government on Monday. My transfer from the Office of the Federal Public Defender to the U.S. Probation office has finally gone through.

@martye So according to the specs you provided, you do have a discreet GPU — the nVidia RTX 3050 which is an entry-level gaming GPU.
My understanding is that the color management console shows that you are using the “Intel UHD” — i.e. the integrated GPU — because you are using a laptop, so even when a discreet GPU is present, the display…[Read more]

@martye I did, although as an Asian American, I was sometimes made to feel unwelcome, as I appeared to be “different” even though my family has been in the U.S. longer than most White families.
Unfortunately, with the political climate today, I feel it’s best for me to avoid traveling to Texas.

@martye With respect to your friend, I have to completely disagree.

Companies hire me for my ability to build solutions for their needs and for my knowledge and experience with a range of products from Microsoft and other vendors. The foundation…[Read more] - Load More
