@martye i knew the tern would dive and reemerge, but not exactly where it would reemerge. i also knew they spun when they reemerged. i took a series of shots in quick succession with the camera tracking the bird. this was the first photo og the bird reemerging from the water. this wasn’t the best quality image of the set, but the heart sha…[Read more]

@martye I’m happy to hear that you like the bobcat pictures.
There is definitely some amount of luck involved in everything we do — even in situations such as studio work, where almost everything is controlled.
While there are never any guarantees of success, the fact that you’re actively studying the craft and art of photography and showing up…[Read more]

@martye After working several jobs at various private corporations and my father’s passing about ten years ago, I really wanted to have a job which would allow me to make a difference, as he did for nearly forty years in his career.
My official job title is “Network Administrator” which is another way of saying “Computer Systems Administrator” or…[Read more]

Thanks @martye for your kind words.
I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work for the Judiciary. Although this career path wasn’t the one I wanted to follow, the job me a decent salary and — much like my journalism career — allows me to help make our society a better place.

@martye I think I’ve gotten so used to that expression that I failed to remember that change is also a constant and should be considered a “guarantee.”
Good luck.

@martye No problem, I’m happy to help if and when I can.
I’m not actually suggesting that you purchase the R100 — only pointing out one of the major expenses that you’d encounter if you decided to buy that camera or any other entry-level Canon camera.
Unfortunately, Canon — like Nikon — has a kind of multi-tiered system for battery usage,…[Read more]

@martye I would agree with most of the reasoning that Kurt’s camera with the exception of #4 and #5. Lenses, memory cards and batteries can be used with other camera bodies and as you’ve come to realize purchasing another body might be a better long term investment and potentially the same price or less expensive, depending on what you choose to…[Read more]

@martye what a bummer. All good suggestions. I would want to be sure I could “try before I buy”. I shoot w 3 different cameras depending on the situation. I have 2 full frame Nikons one of which is morrorless and has an adapter making it possible to use my Nikon lenses. I also shoot with an old Canon 60D (bought used w an array of lenses). Canon…[Read more]

@martye I did some more digging and it appears that you’ll need to use the Canon EOS Utility to read the shutter count on a Canon camera:
https://www.usa.canon.com/support/eos-utilities
Adorama has a pretty good page with information on how to do this for other manufacturers:
https://www.adorama.com/alc/camera-shutter-count/

@martye Canon DPP doesn’t provide shutter counts, but you can get them by uploading a JPEG to this site:

Did you buy your camera new or used?

@martye I’m sorry that Kurt’s wasn’t able to help you.
I suspected that the repair would be about $300. Unfortunately, I don’t think that the price will be much different in Texas. Sometimes there is a discount for Canon or Nikon professional services members, but you’re looking at a major repair, so it’s going to be a bit costly.
If it makes…[Read more]
