I agree the color version is more captivating than the B&W. In particular, for me the blue sea in the pockets of sand/mud across the bottom third of the image and behind the horse’s forelegs and tail really makes the scene come alive with movement.

Wonderful images! My favorite is also the 2nd image, with the curving arc of the contrail next to the moon. Very cool.

Robert, I like it when cropped in a square, with the bison in the bottom center and right squares in a grid of 9 squares. I ‘m guessing you wanted to keep the texture of the fence and browner grass in the upper left, but then you can’t really see the bison. If you crop and keep some of the grass above the bison for texture, it works bett…[Read more]

This is fantastic, Ken. We used to raise monarchs, so I know this can be a tough capture. I love this.

@jdublu Jay, I like Jasenka’s idea to desaturate and darken. Here is my suggestion: using a 4:3 aspect ratio, I removed the foreground dirt and much of the right side – Including your wife! 🙂 A dominant feeling for me in a rainforest is claustrophobia – everything is so dense, including the tree canopy blocking out the sun, that it…[Read more]

@valeryp Beautiful. Valery! I think the range of lighting on the burlap – including the wonderful string curling below the burlap roll – really makes this image, in addition to the composition.
Only thought is about highlighting on the apple sitting on table, in the foreground. It appears that the highlighting for all apples is painted in.…[Read more]

Greg, I also like Valery’s suggestion of a square with no background, so see what you think of this closer crop. Beautiful flower detail!

@kens Fantastic, Ken! I’ve never seen and bumblebee tongue. And the head is sharp, showing all the interesting features, plus the cool blonde hair over the thorax.

I like the light foreground texture with the dark bollards & chains. Is it broken up tarmac? Contrasts nicely with the sea.
New word for me – Bollard. Thanks, Rob!

@robertapple The middle image is my favorite Robert. It’s exquisite. Reminds me of the Vietnamese tradition of tiny sculptures, often placed in nature (see below). The 3rd one shows a great sense of humor!

@patrickw This is brilliant, Patrick, in so many ways. I agree with Jasenka & Bobbi. For me, the “street feel” is the random junk stacked between the woman and the arc, the lighter steps moving left in the direction of the light “stripes.” and the person walking head down, on the mobile. Congrats!

@patrickw Yes, this was several years before Covid, in Vietnam. Many women wore masks, often matching their outfits. Our guide told us for women working in the fields, it was to avoid sunburn, for women in general it was to keep skin light in a culture that valued lighter skin; and in cities to not breath pollution. In big cities somet…[Read more]

I’m also not an expert on street photography. Anyway, my thought on the most compelling of this set is: 1st row, 3rd; 2nd row, 2nd & 3rd, 3rd row, 1st. I also really like the lighting and texture of the 1st row, 1st with guy on bike, but wonder did he pose for you by staring at the corrugated tin wall? A bit confusing, but I find I like i…[Read more]
