great textures between the buoys and the netting.  i like the heavy vignetting.  the blown areas on the buoys don’t bother me much except the ones on the far right (top and bottom) where you can tell it’s still blown but it looks darker gray from the vignette.  not sure what to do to fix that apart from retaking the photo and not blowing the highlights.  lightroom has a preserve highlights option in the vignetting section, that might make the blown highlights feel more natural, but i’m not sure.

the biggest issue for me is the framing.  you have a buoy running off of the frame on the right and large amounts of black space on the top and and left sides that isn’t doing anything for the image.  consider cropping tighter and giving the right and the bottom a little more breathing room so it looks balanced.

My eyes can’t really find a focus spot Lenny, or find a ‘definitive’ story line.  Although I understand the nets and buoys relating to fish harvesting.

I tried a couple of things, the first was rotating the image 10-20 degrees and cropping off the bottom row…

The other thing I found was quite pleasing for my eyes, was flipping your image ‘horizontally’… I found with this version, my eyes were rotating/revolving around ‘inside’ the image.

I also experimented with reducing both the highlights and whites. In combination with other software, I would be able to remove the blown out highlights.

I like both of these edits but more drawn towards the first but both are good.

Lenny, I really like the combo of textures, and dramatic lighting.  I didn’t change your lighting. Instead, for the upper right and left corners, I brought back detail into the image so the empty black spaces are reduced.  In doing this I discovered the bits of burlap in the upper left, which I like.

This is one of those subjects where I would be getting a LOT of different compositions. Very difficult to get the right one, but very very effective if you do.
