Our friend, David (@dchester1001) has passed away. I just found out about it a few hours ago.
David had a few strange medical things going on that they decided to operate on. Unfortunately, things were more widespread than the doctors realised and he didn’t make it out of surgery. I don’t know any more than that.
As you all know, he has been an absolute stalwart around this little community for well over a decade. He has been an admin here for years, has judged stuff, entered stuff and just been an around good person. And he has certainly made our job easier and this place a special spot on the photography internet. He was one of the people who really “got” what we try to do here – always with a friendly nudge in the right direction.
And his photography was stunning – especially the realms of light painting and macro.
I will miss him.

In one word I would define David as inventive, he was a true master of light always open to share his tips and tricks with us. This is a true loss and I hope we all remember him with joy. I’m sure his family and friends will continue to celebrate his life.

So sorry to hear this shocking news about David’s passing. His kind suggestions and photography were always inspiring and a beautiful part of this community – I wish I could see more of his wonderful work. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted in their time of loss.

I, too, can’t (and don’t want to) believe this. David was always so kind with his comments and encouragement, so inspirational in his creative, masterful approaches to the use of light. His theater portraits were unparalleled. I can only imagine that to be in his presence would have been unforgettable.

I’ve been unable to search and find David’s contributions to the LS community other than his comments responding to my posts. Rob, is there any way we can honor David’s contributions by links to his work on LS, especially for those of us who haven’t been a part of the LS community for decades?

Thank you for letting us all know about David’s passing Rob. Just two days ago I had contact with David through Facebook over yet another inventive set of images he had created. This news hits like a stone. David was always a welcoming and a positive light here. We will all miss his presence. So sad.

Mobile Monday I wondered what was up, To say there is going to be a hole in the site where Davids shares brightened our days doesn’t begin to say it He will definitely be missed.At least in a small way its a small comfort to know what happened, I still search the internet from time to time looking for a little piece of news or an obituary for John Thompson.

Well it’s taken some quite devastating news to get me off my backside and reconnect with the LS community. I’ts been a long time since I last posted anything, mainly because I haven’t touched my camera in over a year and have been working hard, had a couple of hospital visits myself, and generally just caught up in life. Retirement is a reality for me now (at least part retirement) and so I will be dusting off the gear at some stage and getting back into photography. But enough of me.
I can’t believe that David has passed away. I was one of the lucky people who actually met him and spent an evening with him learning a bit about light photography. He was such a lovely person and so knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge. I couldn’t believe the gear he set up that night, it was like something from a physics lab. No wonder he was such a master of his art. An incredible loss to not only his family but everyone who knew him. Heartfelt condolences go to everyone whose life he touched. Vale David.

Thanks for your wishes Pat and yes, I will never forget the evening I spent with David. He was in town for a Light Painting catch up with friends and we had arranged to meet up though LS. I looked at his setup and was mesmerised. I had no idea what was what. There were leads and little gadgets attached here and there. I didn’t even bother asking him what everything did because I didn’t want to take up his precious time too much. Certainly something to behold. Sad to think all that knowledge and experience is lost but at least the legacy of his work will live on.

Robert, this is so perfect to have Dahlia’s interview with David introducing himself. Thank you for sharing, he was a beautiful and creative human being whose loss will be felt by all of us. I smile when I think of his motorcycle kaleidoscope digital art but haven’t a clue how to find it again.

As some of you might have noticed, I have not been on LS for some time. Mainly because after Covid I could finally work on my documentary and finish it. It premiered in May 2022. But after that, I was still quite busy and did not make many Photos. So there was not much to share on LS.
Rob, thank you for letting me know about the passing of David which is indeed shocking news.
In 2020 I asked David to work with me on a proposal for a LIVE LIGHT PAINTING project for the Amsterdam Light Festival 2020/2021 edition. We came up with an exciting proposal.
You can visit the Amsterdam Light Festival by boat or do a walking tour. In our proposal, the people on the walking tour could make their own Live Light Painting. The people who were doing the festival by boat could watch how it was made and moments later see the final image projected on a huge screen.
Although it was my idea, David with all his knowledge was going to take the lead to actually design it and write down and list all the technical requirements.
Of course, the brilliant jury did not choose our project.It was wonderful to work with David and we were looking forward to meeting each other in Amsterdam to build the project for the festival. It was not meant to be.
David, your inspiration, creativity, and positive critique will be missed by all of us. You will be missed.
