The bird throwdown off to a good start. I’ve been making progress on the spring clean-up around the property and was hoping to spend more time exploring the region and get away from the bird photos for a bit. Oh well. The best laid plans… as they say. 🙂

I have a love-hate relaionship with hadeda ibises. They look ancient (evil-ish) and they are noisy. Very noisy – and not with a call that one can appreciate. But now and again when positioned correctly in the sun, they offer a decent shot.

We very nearly never have a Pileated Woodpecker visit us, though the books say they are here year round. Today, he did…

Not something you see everyday.
The Curlew is one of the most iconic birds of the Irish countryside
According to recent data, 90% of the Irish breeding population has been lost since the 1970s. A national survey carried out between 2015 – 2017, funded by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and conducted by BirdWatch Ireland and others, found that only 138 pairs remain , This was 2022 and a pair were feeding not far in front of me lovely birds indeed.Did not want to go any closer in case i disturbed them feeding so this is closest frame

I love everyone’s shots so far, fantastic and kudos to all. I’m n0t a birder with a super-telephoto but I occasionally see a bird stop close by for a photo op. I call this one “Jemima Puddleduck” in honor of Beatrix Potter’s story. She flew over from the park nearby for a sip from a puddle at the entrance of our alleyway.
-
January 24, 2024 at 4:11 pm #521214
Lots of grackles in Dallas, you can always spot them by their yellow eyes. They are definitely birds with attitude.
-
January 25, 2024 at 8:05 pm #521253
Two beautiful shots Marty , i was watching a backyard feeder video yesterday and apparently these birds are aggressive to the smaller birds and if possible try not to encourage them by arranging feeders that they find hard to feed from , i understand what they were saying and the reasons behind these thoughts but they are a beautiful bird i think , we don’t have them our closest bird to them i think is the common blackbird or Turdus merula.
-
January 26, 2024 at 9:10 am #521266
You’re right, Patrick. Grackles are very aggressive, noisy blackbirds that many consider a nuisance. They’re rather known as the “bird Texans love to hate” here, but photographers love them because they’re unafraid and easy to get shots of. You might enjoy this humorous article about grackles, they’re the stuff of urban legends – hero or villain?

Thanks, Beaky. I guess if a bird standing in the middle of the road when a car’s coming has no fear, then crashing waves are also nothing to a sandpiper. Their quick reactions are no problem. 🙂 Fun to watch though!

Not the best shot, but a great experience. I went to the arboretum & saw a large tree loaded with bright red berries. A flock of birds kept flying in & out so I knew it must be cedar waxwings. They were greedily flinging berries right & left in a feeding frenzy. Back & forth they came, over & over. It was great fun trying to capture shots of them even though I only have a kit telephotos lens. They spooked easily & would fly off if I got any closer. This is my best shot of one eating a berry. I returned to the same spot the next day & they had picked it clean.

Allows Edits? Nothanks beaky. in the us we call the white herons egrets. these are great egrets, with 2 smaller versions that are more common down south – the snowy egret and the cattle egret. the smaller egrets often confused with the juvenile great blue heron, which is also white but with lime green legs.

A mama cardinal built a nest in a small potted tree by our back door several years ago. I had a hard time getting decent shots but at least managed to capture some great memories. We were proud “grandparents” when 2 out of 3 eggs hatched and fledged. It was a joy watching mama and daddy teaching the babies how to find food in the grass and fly up the trunk of an oak tree to a branch jump by jump in our back yard. Dad was just as much a part of the training as mom.
Apologies for the last shot, the action happened so quickly & my camera craft & lens were not up to the challenge at that distance but it’s still a fond memory.

@martye I like the composition of this image, although at first glance, I think the duck’s head is getting a little lost against the background. It appears that you’ve burned-down (darkened) the background a little, and IDK if that’s really necessary.
-
April 2, 2024 at 5:21 pm #524122
@kwongphotography Thank you for your comments. You are right that the duck’s head is a little lost and I darkened the background a little to compensate. I’m still learning about when to burn or dodge and how much is too much, not enough, or just right. The vivid colors of tulips in the original shot seemed to make the duck a little lost (camouflaged?) , and I was wanting to highlight the duck’s eye if possible. I’m also a beginner with monochrome, so this is good feedback. Here’s the original if that matters.
-
April 2, 2024 at 5:46 pm #524125
@martye The look of an image is very subjective, so please take what I say with a grain of salt. I am a little different than most people and believe the challenge is to get the image right in camera and do as little as possible in post processing. The majority of the pictures I’ve posted here and on my website have minimal processing and many are almost straight out of the camera.
I tend to like my images a little darker and more saturated than a lot of people, however, my opinion is that overall, the duck is a little underexposed. I can barely see the catch light in its eye. Obviously, you could easily fix this if you chose to do so. 😉
