Every good boat needs a proper propeller to motor it’s way around. Problems ensue when the propeller and boat become separated, especially when done in a sudden and surprising manner. Today, we look at one such propeller… this was retrieved from a sunken steam tug near Vancouver Island.

You would be surprised how small the pin that holds a propeller shaft in place actually is.

I certainly was, last time I broke one. 🙁

@admin, was that on one of your boats? Did it cause an accident? Sometimes propeller incidents can be rather nasty. On our blog, one of our visitors pointed out that the chunks missing out of this propeller and the sign stating the ship that used this is now sunk are probably related. I didn’t think of that, but upon reflection totally agree…

Yeah, was on my dad’s boat. It was pretty small though and no accident.

Problem is that when you’re propelling the boat forward, there’s not really a problem if the pin is broken. If you hit reverse, then it can rip the whole propeller shaft out. On big boats, I guess that means they hit the pier cos that’s usually the only time they hit reverse (and find out).

That’s the definition of a “bad day”, right there! Yikes.
