My niece, Alyson has recently finished a school project on passion. She chose photography as her subject for the project. Following is what she presented to the class:
Alyson Martin June 8 at 10:13pm Report
When I mention photography what comes to your mind? Maybe a picture you’ve admired? Camera’s with so many settings you’d be lost if you owned one? A striking picture you’ve seen on a billboard? Or maybe even something else, but that’s the thing I love about photography’ it means something different to every person. My name is Alyson Martin and I am passionate about photography.
Photography is something that effects everyone differently. Two people could look at the same picture and get something completely different out of it. It can remind us of past memories or experiences, or it can show two sides of the same story. For example, a picture of a soldier could be seen as an enemy or a protector depending on who sees it. The only way I can think to describe photography is poetry for your eyes; an expression too strong for words.
However, this is my interpretation of it and I”m certain there are many more. Photographers all over the world try to describe what photography means to them. Some of the most favourited quotes I’ve gathered are these:
‘Photography is a secret about a secret, the more it tells you the less you know.’ -Diane Arbus
‘Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment; photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure.’ -Tony Benn
‘Beauty can be seen in all things, seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph.’ -Matt Hardy
‘I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it.’ – Unknown
‘you dont take a photograph. You make it.’ -Ansel Adams
‘the camera doesn’t make abit of difference. all of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE.’ -Ernst Haas
and lastly,
‘There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.’ -Ansel Adams
I chose these quotes because I found depth in all of them. It is no surprise that these quotes are popular because I’m sure each photographyer can agree – or at least relate – to each of them.
Photography is an art. And as an art it has many different styles. There are photographs of nature, sun rays, underwater, people, animals, extreme weather, macro and many more. Although I love and admire all kinds of photography, I find myself drawn to macro, which is a close-up picture of something, usually something small. I love it because I see the beauty in detail’ the small things that generally go by unnoticed. Ever day you probably see hundreds of pairs of eyes, but never see how unique each pair can be
http://www.weeklyshot.org/theme/macro/featured/70/?ref=nfPHotos like this intrigue me. Give me something to think about. Other photos inspire me, they can have amazing lighting, or an interesting point of view. This is what made me want to take my own pictures. And when I started to take them, they weren’t that great. But I didn’t give up. Over time I started to get better and I tested out different styles so I could create my own. After awhile I found out I really enjoyed pictures of sun rays. I practiced constantly, my camera became an extension of myself. I take it everywhere in case I see something I want to capture. I’m always learning more and if I have questions I ask my aunty Mo.
Aunty mo is also a photographer. She’s taught me more than anyone and it’s her photos I admire most. I love her view of everything around her, and the way she describes things. She finds a way to put her humor into her photos unliked any others I’ve seen.
She once told me that after awhile you can tell who’s pictures is who’s because the way they see the world becomes familiar if you see enough of them.Their personality shows through the photo. Here are some of her photos.
(edited out my photos… you’ve seen them).Ever since I started photography, I”ve known it’s something I won’t give up. I have no doubt it will play a part in my future. I’m not sure whether I want to persue photography as a career, but it is something that can keep my focus no matter what surrounds me. Photography has already added to my life and personality, it’s taught me to appreciate more and to pay more attention to the world around me. I love photography and the pride I feel when I take a picture I like. These are some of my pictures

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That is because it takes that many words just to describe one picture. But even those words could never truly match up to the passion I call photography. -

Thanks Toad ! You can well imagine the thrill I feel at her kind words (she is an angel) but what REALLY struck me were the words she used to describe what photography is to her: “poetry for your eyes; an expression too strong for words.”
Beautiful. -

Beautiful stuff Alyson. There’s a resounding round of applause all the way from Australia.
Join her up this week and she’ll be posted as photographer of the week. Damn it, she’s already there.
As with photographs, writing about photography in this way resonates with us all. The great thing for Alyson is, she will add to this all her life. Every day photography will take on new meaning for her and Mo, you’ll be fortunate to see it happen and know you contributed greatly.
Damn it! I have something in my eye. I need a tissue. Must be the dust in the dungeon.
Give this one to Alyson to add to her list.
