This is a pretty tight square crop. Spontaneously took this because I like the quality of the light. Using a Canon AE-1, 50mm 1.8 lens, and color negative film (either Fujifilm Superia x-tra 400 or expired Kodak Gold 200).

@michael-lloyd, I was actually trying to draw attention to the hands, but the shadows defeated me here. It turns out that the hands and rose are at the same distance. If I’d tried this shot 10 minutes earlier, when the first was taken, it might have worked out better (the light on the hands would have been softer, the rose would have been in shadow).
@driverv, yeah I have some images I really like square. This one, unfortunately is only about 25% of the original, and using thedarkroom.com’s standard scans it leaves me with just over 500 pixels each way! I’m pretty hesitant to try printing, but the sharpness is so good I may try. On the other hand, I may have to have a print made from the negative if I can find a lab to crop for me. Meanwhile I can always dream of having a macro lens for shots like this. -
Ah.. that makes sense. It’s hard to know for sure with a small jpg but it looks like you had really good control of the exposure on the second shot. 10 minutes earlier and the light might’ve been too harsh. I forget who makes it but if you had a handheld Scrim to diffuse the light a little that might’ve helped. I know you are constrained by your living space as far as storage goes but it’s flat and small (sort of) and would come in real handy for shots like this one.
Here it is. It’s called a Trigrip and it’s made by Lastolite. You can bounce a strobe off of it, reflect light from it, and diffuse light thru it. It’s light enough to hold with one hand.

Thanks for the suggestion michael-lloyd, I may have to try to make something up myself to try it out.
I agree with your critique of the shadows @thecupboardlady, one of the reasons I aggressively crop my photos, even if it makes printing a challenge, is because it is a retroactive exercise in composition. I don’t have the equipment to fill the frame and I wasn’t planning exactly how to crop, so the shadow made it’s way in there. I don’t know if I could crop any tighter though. Not only would I lose valuable resolution, but also lose parts of the head and wing. Had I waited a few minutes on scene it might have worked though. Thanks for the input!
